Lord, let me and all high school and college students have a good school year, good grades, good friends, good experiences, and good mental, physical, and spiritual health. Amen.

I'm currently living in a fairly small town in the deep south. There is a catholic community, but it is hard to find people I can relate to or talk about my religion with. Most of them are bigots and don't share the same values. Not to mention, my older family members are very conservative and traditional catholics. I definitely hesitate to share my experiences and my practice because I'm considered a heretic. I may not see God the way they see God.
My practice is very personal to me, but at the same time, I would love to have friends who share similar experiences or friends who practice differently who are willing to share while offering a safe space to share mine.
I find it comforting that there's a large amount of queer christians, christian witches, leftist christians, and folk catholics on tumblr. When I first discovered that, it shocked me a little. It makes me very happy.

I have this St Michael statue on my altar and I know that it is common for the devil to be painted darker because he's like burnt from hell, but...I don't know.
I'm trying to find somebody in my area who can paint statues. I know it wasn't the original intent, but I don't necessarily feel great about having a statue of a white man stepping on and pointing a sword at a black man on my altar. Am I being overdramatic??? Like this feels racist.
I'm wanting to get the devil repainted to maybe a maroon.
Edit: Just also learned that depictions of the devil being red also came from racism towards indigenous people, so scratch that.
Maybe a green or purple.

My boyfriend is not a religious person. That's completely okay with me. I don't care at all.
My parents really pushed the importance of going to mass together and my mom said she wants us to go to mass together every single week. She said, "Couples who go to mass together stay together."
I told him that he didn't have to go if he didn't want to go. It isn't a deal breaker for me at all. I told him I will literally go to mass by myself and lie that he was there too if I have to.
He said that he doesn't mind going to mass with me every week because that just gives him another chance to spend time with me and he knows that it's important to me.
(AWWW WHAT THE HELL. THAT'S SO FUCKING SWEET. WHAT THE HELL. EWWW MY BOYFRIEND LOVES ME GET A LOAD OF THIS GUY.)
Again, It wouldn't have mattered to me If he wanted to go to mass or if he was religious or non religious...but that was really heartwarming. Like, giggling, kicking my feet in the air, tee hee tee hee, all of that.
So, I've been taking him to church with me. We've kind of been taking a "tour" of all the Catholic churches in our area. We have two left to cover. Our town is small.
I go to mass two times a week. Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, I go to mass at one out of three of my favorite churches in the area.
On Sunday, I go to this one church I'm not particularly fond of. It's the wealthiest church in the area, it's filled with snooty white people, I went to elementary school there, and the priest there is fake as fuck and hella racist. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful church though.
Why do I go there? Church choir! Which I am fond of.
Attending just to attend isnt very pleasant for me. I love mass...just not at this church.
Singing in the church choir though is a completely different experience.
I eventually want to start going to daily mass...but it's hard for ya girl to get up in the morning.
Last month, I took my boyfriend to this church. This was before I joined church choir.
As soon as we walked in, we got lots of uncomfortable stares. He said it felt like they were judging his every move.
When he went up with his arms crossed in the communion line, he looked over and there was a group of old ladies making disgusted faces at him and scoffing. What the hell?
We went to that church a second time. We weren't planning to that day. We were planning to go to a church we actually liked, but I wasn't ready on time. My bad, fam.
When he went up with his arms crossed, the parishioner that was distributing the Eucharist stared at him for a solid 5 seconds, scoffed, made a disgusted face, and then rushed his blessing.
When we got to our pews, he whispered to me that he really didn't like when they do communion here and it felt like a humiliation ritual.
We have never had this problem with any other church. Only this one.
I'm so frustrated and annoyed that there are people who still call themselves Catholic after choosing to treat people this way. Humble yourselves.
I will never take him to that church ever again. I never want to put him through that ever again.

I've asked myself from time to time, "What if I'm wrong? What if being queer is a sin and I am going to hell?"
First off, I don't believe hell is a literal place, but I believe it is a state of being.
Second off, I love God so dearly, okay? Like God has accepted and loved me for who I am no matter what state I am in and has been my light in dark times. God has given me more love, patience, and understanding than anybody ever will.
I say this will full confidence though.
If I died and God told me that being queer was a sin, I wouldn't change my mind.
I would rather go to hell than believe that LOVE is sinful and that the bitter people who stand for oppressive and harmful and bigoted ideologies are the ones in the right.
But hey, that will never happen because, ya know, being queer isn't a sin and that's not who God is.
To me, queerness is proof that God is real.
And if you maybe don't believe in God or maybe believe in multiple gods, there's nothing wrong with that too.
Hell, I'm an omnist. I don't believe there is one right religious belief. I don't give a shit as long as whatever you believe is ethical, helps you connect deeper with yourself, the earth, and the people around you, and helps you be the best person you can be. Walk the Earth submerged in love. Love alone is enough.

I chose to start veiling in December 2025. For months beforehand, It suddenly called to me and since I've started, I've fallen in love with it oh so much.
-
On Saturday and Sunday mass, I wear a mantilla or a headscarf. Having something covering my head makes my brain go quiet. It creates a wall, holding a space for only me and my Lord. On the other side of that wall is the outside world and anything that may get in the way of my focus on the things that are important. This way, I can converse with God without any noise and hear God's voice clearer.
Wearing the veil makes me feel special. Not in a boastful way, but in a way that reminds me that I am a beautiful child of God and that I am loved, important, valued, and safe despite what the outside world is like. It makes me feel beautiful like a princess and brings me peace.
Outside of mass or on other days, I like to veil by tying a bandana around my hair and securing it with cute hair clips, barrettes, and bobby pins. I have a large collection of bandanas. I often pair it with some earrings and a bold lipstick.
-
Though I am not always consistent, I try to veil everyday.
I veil as an act of devotion and love, to carry my intentions with me throughout the day, to protect my energy, to keep me in a focused and grounded mind space, and also, just to express myself and feel good about how I look.
-
When my veiling journey started, I didn't exactly understand it. When I would see other people veiling at mass, I would think to myself, "What is the point? How does veiling deepen your relationship with God in any way? How is that different than just showing up to mass?"
I knew that other witches online veiled. I learned that they used it for devotion, protection, and grounding. I thought, "Maybe Catholics who veil do so for the same reason." I understood at that point that veiling doesn't define one's relationship with God, but is used as a tool to deepen their own experience and symbolize their deep love for God.
-
At that point though, I didn't think it was for me. Growing up, I was kind of told that veiling was only for really good Catholics who went to church everyday and followed Catholicism by the handbook.
And bro, I'm a witch and I'm queer. I also skip mass once in a while. I know it sounds silly, but I was under the impression that I didn't deserve to veil or that I wasn't worthy enough to veil.
-
In October 2025, I felt a very strong pull towards veiling. I have no idea why or what got me there. Again, I never thought of veiling as something I could do. Even in a non-catholic context. I was also in a weird headspace at this point in my life. Something kept urging me to try veiling. I didn't want to start veiling at mass just because I felt like it one day. I didn't want to seem performative. Of course, it's okay If people just decided one day they want to veil. That's completely personal to each individual, but I thought of it as if it was a big life decision.
-
Only 2 months later, I tried veiling for the first time and something inside of me clicked. I have always felt like a child of God and I have always felt loved and valued by God, but it was as if those feelings were amplified 1000x. It felt like I was wearing noise canceling headphones but for my thoughts and for my anxieties. I fell in love immediately.
-
Of course, this is only my experience with veiling. It is not universal and my relationship with religion is very personal. If anybody else veils no matter what religious or spiritual background you come from, I would love to hear about your experience with veiling if you're willing to share. It is a completely safe space to do so and I would love to hear.
