Every day, thousands of visitors stand beneath the giant crucifix inside the Sagrada Família.

What they're looking at isn't an imaginary face or an idealized body.

It's Mariano Barceló—one of the stonemasons who spent years building the basilica with his own hands.

When Antoni Gaudí needed a model for Christ, he didn't hire a professional actor or invent the figure from memory.

He chose someone he knew.

Mariano wasn't just a craftsman on the project—he became the living model for one of its most sacred sculptures.

Gaudí's process was extraordinary.

He photographed Mariano from every angle, then covered him in plaster to create a life-sized mold of his body.

That model was used by sculptor Carles Mani to create the original crucifix, and more than a century later it inspired the Christ that hangs above the basilica's main altar today.

For Mariano's family, this story was passed down from generation to generation.

They had an old photograph, but almost no official records survived because many of the Sagrada Família's archives were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War.

Then, nearly 100 years later, historians uncovered a forgotten 1926 obituary.

It confirmed everything.

The article honored Mariano's dedication to the Sagrada Família and explicitly identified him as Gaudí's model for Christ.

A family story had finally become documented history.
