āThe True Costā was a movie I watched in high school and if anything started me on the journey towards wanting to live sustainably it was this movie.
It was a very shocking realization for me. Iād always known about the amount of food waste and littering that went on in the world and Iād been taught that we fight that by composting and recycling. But I hadnāt know about the environmental waste caused by consumerism in the fashion industry or the concept of fast fashion.
The most shocking visual was of the mountains and mountains of discarded clothing in Haiti. Itās so irresponsible and disrespectful that countries such as ours ship all our waste to other countries, as if they are lesser than us or or deserve less quality of life. It is also irresponsible and disrespectful that most of us live in ignorance that this is happening.
Iāve decided to try and buy mostly secondhand from now on and I research the places I donate to, to make sure they wonāt just throw the clothes away anyways. But most importantly Iām trying now to buy or sell clothing anyway. I want to wear the stuff I own well and not take it for granted anymore.

I know this expose āThe True Costā came out awhile back, but, let this message sink in, they are convincing us to treat everything including things that we should keep; cars, appliances, people, as disposable, there are a ton of loopholes to keep exploiting, and distractingly the middle class has disappeared, the most basic things we do not have; shelter, a home, education, a car...this shopping eases the pain, but keeps us broke. Iām guilty, Iāve been reducing my fast fashion purchases, itās a long process. But Iām aware. I thrift most of the things I wear, repurposing some, but this being the second biggest pollutant to the environment next to the oil industries, this is a huge problem. What are we going to do to reduce waste, reduce exploitation, reduce slavery worldwide?
