Looking for a plastic straw to sip your soda? It's no longer allowed in Seattle bars and restaurants.
“Seattle is believed to be the first major U.S. city to ban single-use plastic straws and utensils in food service.”
“California's legislature is considering statewide restrictions, but not an outright ban, on single-use plastic straws. It would block restaurants from providing straws as a default but would still allow a customer to request one. It's passed the state assembly and now awaits action in the senate.”
Starbucks says it will replace plastic straws in stores globally with ones made from other materials by 2020, a nod to the growing push for businesses to be more environmentally friendly.
“Starbucks said Monday that by 2020, it will be using straws made from biodegradable materials like paper and specially designed lids. The company already offers alternative straws in Seattle.”
“The advocacy group 5 Gyres notes that the top five biggest sources of single-use plastic are plastic bags, water bottles, to-go containers, to-go cups and straws.”
New research published in the journal Marine Policy shows that humanity's garbage isn't just floating on the ocean surface where there might be some hope of cleaning it up. Video footage has captured images of garbage — including single-use plastics — on the bottom of the earth's deepest ocean trench more than 10 km below.

Takeout creates a lot of trash. It doesn’t have to.
Even if you are one of the virtuous few who try to make a home-cooked meal every night, some nights cry out for takeout or delivery. Someone else taking care of dinner for you after a long day — it can be just what the doctor ordered.
And it’s popular: Food delivery is a $43 billion business in the US today. In many cases, not only are these services delivering food, they’re delivering lots of extra stuff: bags, boxes, wrapping, napkins, utensils, packs of condiments, colorful branded bits and bobs.
These little containers and wrappers may not seem like a big deal, but in the U.S., packaging makes up the largest category of municipal waste.
On top of that, single-use items like disposable plates and utensils, junk mail, and paper towels make up another 10% of our discards.
It piles up in our landfills, while manufacturing, shipping, and disposing of all of this stuff — often used for mere seconds — creates big greenhouse gas emissions.
“We really do need to prioritize reduce and reuse over recycling,” said Anne Krieghoff, solid waste and recycling program coordinator at the University of California Irvine. “Recycling is great to deal with a product once it’s already in your hand. But waste minimization is more important.”
Under Krieghoff’s watch, UC Irvine has reduced waste to the point that it now diverts 80 percent of its garbage from landfills. The goal: zero waste. UC Irvine isn’t alone: cities, counties, and large companies across the country are shooting for zero waste.

More than 40 firms, including Coca-Cola and Asda, have promised to reduce harmful packaging over the next seven years.

Eliminate difficult or unnecessary single use plastic packaging through better design
Make 100% of plastic packaging reusable or recyclable or compostable
Make sure 70% of plastic packaging is recycled or composted
30% of all plastic packaging to include recycled material”
Proposal to limit straws part of a draft strategy to cut down on plastic and Styrofoam waste, which also includes restrictions on plastic bags, takeout containers and disposable cups. The strategy will be considered by council in May.
Vancouver “says it costs about $2.5 million per year to collect single-use items from public green spaces and waste bins.” “Canadians throw out about 57 million straws every day.”
But Vancouver is not calling for an outright ban of plastic straws. “Instead, they would be optional under the city's proposals, so servers would ask customers whether they want a straw with their cocktails.” This is “because some people need them to drink, said Albert Shamess, the city's director of waste management and resource recovery.”
Hopefully “there will be a change in the types of straws that are available and the types of materials that they're made of."

Disposable plastic straws are about to be banned throughout Britain. Here’s what’s happening with straws in Canada and a closer look at what impact such bans could really have.
The “discussion needs to go beyond straw bans in order to make a real difference... while banning straws is a logical place to start, 300 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year, and very little of that is straws.”
“while a ban may be an option for straws, which are rarely essential, it isn't for many of the other plastics in our lives that we use to build cars and electronics, package food and deliver modern medicine: "It's hard to imagine a world where we ban all the plastics from all the uses we use today."
In those cases, broader, systemic changes are needed to make plastic products more easily reused, recycled or safely decomposed so they don't pollute the environment.”
"What's really important is to make sure that we have monitoring and research that actually measures the effectiveness of those policies."
A researcher tallied how much has been manufactured since plastic's invention: "Eight point three billion metric tons of plastics produced so far. That's just really a staggering amount."

Malibu Moves To Ban Single-Use PlasticÂ
In terms of environmental impact, there are alternatives to plastic straws — glass, paper, metal even. But each one had its particular flaw in the eyes of Robert Morris, who owns the Paradise Cove restaurant in Malibu, Calif.
“I’ve tried paper, but they just don’t work as well with our cocktails, and we’ve had paper straws in the past for years, but pasta straws are just better and take less time to decompose,” Morris said.
Morris’ concern about the consequences of his straw choice is being driven in part by the actions of the city of Malibu, which is moving to ban single-use plastic straws, utensils and stirrers to reduce the harmful effects on the environment. Restaurants and other businesses have until June 1 to swap out plastic for reusable and biodegradable straws and cutlery.
Britain plans to ban the sale of plastic straws and other single-use plastic products and is pressing Commonwealth allies to also take action to tackle marine waste.
“May has pledged to eradicate avoidable plastic waste by 2042 as part of a "national plan of action".”
Researchers say even tiny plastic particles less than five millimetres in size can ferry traces of metals like zinc, copper and cadmium into the food chain.
“The study said those toxins, absorbed by the plastic, get into the intertidal ecosystem in three ways:
Leaching from the plastic directly into the water.
Being eaten by animals at the bottom of the food chain.
Sitting as a pollution "point source," or a spot from which pollutants are leaked.”
