Because they died and were reborn with no memories of their past, but they still stick with each other. Wanting to be together has become a part of their personalities, so that even death couldn’t wipe it out. 

Because respect and support is just as important part of their relationship as passion and it doesn’t make them less in love.

Because they are so awesomely equal. None of them suppresses, uses of mistreats the other one.

Because they know when to lead and when to let the other one lead.

Because Honerva isn’t portrayed as a streotypical beauty, and Zarkon still falls for her right away. (This doesn’t mean she isn’t pretty, just her other qualities prevail)

Because Zarkon isn’t jealous that he is not the smartest one in the room. Instead, he supports his wife and helps her with her research

Because of “Lovers change, love stays” trope. From what they were when they met, over what they became before the rift accident, to what they are in the present they became different people, but they still love and respect each other.

Because they value each other’s opinions above anyone else’s : when Haggar accepts Zarkon’s actions without questioning them or when Zarkon goes with Haggar’s plan instead of Prorok’s seemingly better suggestion.

Because they trust each other’s abilities: when Honerva trusts that Zarkon and other paladins will be able to fight off rift creatures if they reappear and when Zarkon is willing to postpone Voltron hunt for Haggar’s experiments.

Because they would die for each other: jump into the rift for Honerva or overload herself with quintessence in order to weaken Voltron to help Zarkon.

Because they support each other even in obviously unreasonable endeavours: fighting Voltron alone or keeping the rift open if it is about to collapse.

Because, despite this huge body size difference, they look at each other on the same level.

Because of “I need to go”.

Because Zarkon shows off in his lion and Honerva watches him, flustered.

Because “we need to protect our emperor”.

Because they managed to make Lotor.
