THERE WERE TIMES WHEN HE WONDERED IF HE GRACED THERAโS RESIDENCE A LITTLE TOO MUCH. This was, after all, the umpteenth time she had played host to his presence, compared with the small handful of occasions where she had stepped foot inside the TARDIS. However, he quickly concluded that Thera was a confident sort - if he was indeed proving to be a bother, then she would have no doubt politely informed him by now, but she hadnโt. He never liked imposing on those who deserved such consideration; it never particularly helped his conscience that he thoroughly enjoyed her company.
STILL, AS HE MAINTAINED HIS RELAXED POSTURE ON THE SOFA NEXT TO HIS FRIEND, LISTENING INTENTLY AS SHE TALKED, HE COULDNโT HELP BUT RELISH IN A TRANQUILITY THAT HE WAS SELDOM OTHERWISE EXPOSED TO. For a being that possessed the entire universe at just the flick of a switch, places that werenโt filled with danger appeared to be in short supply, which meant that any chance to indulge a little, he grasped, and Thera was often a great source. Their friendship had blossomed, and he did not hesitate in considering her one of his nearest and dearest.
SO DEAR, IN FACT, THAT AS HE KEPT HIS GAZE ON HER, BOTH HEARTS EXPERIENCED A TINY FLUTTER, SOMETHING WHICH INTERNALLY CAUGHT HIM OFF-GUARD. The truth remained that he had battled against more intimate feelings for quite some time, valuing the strength of his platonic bond with her more than anything else. Despite this, his guard faltered now and again, however much he always tried his hardest to hide it - although on this occasion, he felt compelled to gently grasp a strand of her hair in-between his fingers, gently tucking it behind her ear with a small smile.
A DELICATE BREATH IN, BEFORE SUDDEN INSTINCT TOOK CONTROL OF HIS ACTIONS ONCE AGAIN. Leaning in, he closed his eyes as he planted the most careful of kisses to her lips, ignoring the sudden flush that erupted onto his cheeks. His initial elation was quickly replaced with a feeling of utter dread, however, and his eyes snapped open once more, a subtly terrified expression present as he quickly withdrew.
โOh noโฆThera, Iโm so sorryโฆโ
... Was she talking too much? Short answer; yes. Yes, she was talking too much. Thera could tell that she was by the way the Doctorโs responses became shorter as the conversation went on, and the way he sat there with a faint smile on his face and head on his hand, seeming to listen, but she noticed every so often his expression grew a little too fixed, and his eyes just a little bit glazed.
She was probably boring the poor man to tears, and he was just too sweet and polite to let her know. Her opinion on the latest behind-the-scenes scandal at the British Museum faltered a little, not quite stumbling but definitely stubbing its toe on the notion of the word sweet. Because he was, in a warm and gentle sort of way, and an odd kind of innocence for someone who had lived so long and seen what he had seen. Sheโd come to think that that sort of thing made a person tough and jaded - but maybe that was just her.
The hesitation went a second more before she recovered, silently admonishing herself to behave. A mental leash went over what suddenly skipped across her mind, pulling them back to heel. ย And besides, there he went, glazing over once again. Her cheeks plumped with wry amusement and sheโd just resolved to finish her tale more quickly when long fingers reached across to her hair.
Playing with it? Fixing it? Thera wasnโt sure either way, but it caused a startled blink on the outside and ... a very annoying little jump on the inside. A smile curved as she looked over at him, about to ask or to make light of a gesture that probably didnโt mean ... oh. Oh. She was still registering what had happened when he pulled away, his entire face turning that vibrant peach colour it seemed to love - and no wonder, because after at least half a dozen very near misses, heโd actually gone and done the deed.
โWell.โ Thera blinked a few times, at a loss for words. โThat ... really wasnโt too bad.โ
