Firstly, you don’t need to be here all the time to be considered part of the fandom - you’re welcome, always, no matter how much or how little we see you!

Secondly - well, I don’t know your exact circumstances, so I’ll lay out a few of the ways you can drop into fandom and say hi, and I hope one of them might work for you if that’s what you want.

- the Skype chat. You can log on to skype anywhere, I think (I only do it from my own computer, but I know it’s possible), and we’re pretty chill about people coming and going infrequently - you’re welcome to just show up, drop a theory or a conversation or just a “HI PEOPLE” and stay for as long or short a time as you like. If you want to join, message one of us and we can add you.

- obv tumblr, but that’s tricky when you don’t have time to browse the site much - I’m guessing you’ve got other things to do on the computer! If you have thoughts on the books you could compile them during the week and then post them all at once - then pick up our responses next time you’re around!

- there is a fb group about, but I don’t have the link to it; pretty sure @magic-redhead would be able to connect you if you asked her :)

I haven’t seen the film (yet? Idk. I can wait), and males do have wings, but it’s still jarring (I have quite specific entomology growling about ‘male default’ for hymenoptera, because oh come on).

Male ants are only produced during a very limited time of the year (around now UK time) in readiness for mating flights. They’re small, and fragile by ant standards, and the wings fall off after they’ve mated (they live for like, a few weeks maximum). They also generally don’t fly very far.  The new gynes - the fertile females that will become queens if mated / founding a colony successfully - tend to fly considerably further, and while their wings do fall off fairly soon if mated, they generally are much more robust and considerably larger than their males. Would seem to make a better steed.

Workers are non-mating females (can sometimes lay unfertilised eggs, which will only develop into males, if not eaten by the rest of the colony) never have wings.

You’re welcome. I’d have had no clue, but I happened to turn on Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) the other night and there was a commercial for it. They have a whole host of times they’re going to run the movie so you might want to check TV Guide or something if there’s a better time.
