🤷🏼♀️
I've drawn for my whole life, but I stopped having fun with it at some point in high school when art somehow became a matter of Improving. I didn't like doing studies or "practicing" deliberately, so art became progressively more of a slog of things I Had To Do instead of something I wanted to do, and I also felt guilty about not improving or Becoming Good(????). It dictated what I was "allowed" to draw, including how much I was "allowed" to draw stuff I liked / that was fun vs. things for improving my skills.
This vague set of requirements hung over me to some degree for literally years, even as an adult.
A couple of years ago, I decided, fuck it. I have no intention of drawing for a living, and I'm also never taking commissions again, so who do I "owe" my technical improvement to? Literally no one.
I've been having fun drawing for the first time in probably over a decade. I draw what I want. I'm going to draw my favorite OC in 3/4 facing left a thousand times exactly the same way if I want to, and I can't be stopped.
If my art is "bad" or doesn't improve, that's everyone else's problem. I'd rather draw badly and have fun than feel beholden to a vague set of guidelines and never draw anything as a result.
Do you have THAT post that you’ve created that’s got the most notes and it makes up about 95% of your notifications?
Or is it just me?
