â Thalril and Olmara
Thalril announced himself as he always did, with a simple knock and three short words:Â âOlmara, itâs me.â Heâd made an arrangement with her, a special deal on crops to feed the refugees TAI took in, but unfortunately for him, because he was the one whoâd suggested it, he was the one they made go to her. It wasnât that he disliked Olmara, but he didnât like being around her, either. She was always so bubbly and happy, probably even moreso than most Aurin he knew. As such, she grated on Thalrilâs nerves endlessly.
He waited after the knock, counting down the seconds that inconvenience was taking from him. When he got to 15, he became concerned.
âOlmara? Are you in?â he toned, knocking again. This time, he got to seven before the door opened.
She didnât look well. Olmaraâs hair hung down her back, her clothes were dirty and untucked, and she blinked in the sun like she hadnât been outside in days. âHey Thalril, whatâre you- oh, shoot, todayâs the shipment day, ainât it? I-I plum forogt, let me just... go gather what I can.â She slid past the Mordesh towards her crops, but Thalril continued to stare. He didnât especially care about Olmaraâs personal life, but when he saw her like this, even he had to admit something was off.
âOlmara,â he called, easily striding after her. âIs there... something troubling you? Your countenance is worrisome.â
She was already on her knees, picking vegetables out of the ground, btu Olmara spared a glance up at Thalril. âMy what? I donât really know what yer talkinâ about,â she said, picking through the soil again. âThings ainât really... that great, but it ainât... donât worry about it.â
He didnât. âI see. Then, do you require any help with these fruits and vegetables? Their requirement is rather necessary.â He hoped she wouldnât, but the sooner the cargo was ready to go, the better.
âUh, no, itâs fine, I donât... I donât wanna...â Thalril looked down just as Olmaraâs shoulders began to tremble. His eyes widened as she began to sob, crouched down in the dirt. âIâm s-sorry, Iâll be... o-okay.â
Glancing side to side as if he were worried someone would spot this moment of weakness, Thalril knelt down beside her. âAre you... well, Olmara? Obviously, something is the matter, so there is no point in lying to me.â
She wiped her eyes with dirt-stained hands, chest heaving in great, sobbing gulps of air. âI-I found... I found my brother,â she said. âI found âim. I w-was lookinâ fer him fer so long, anâ I... I found âim!â Despite the news, she continued to cry.
âIs that not a good thing?â asked Thalril. He reached out, gently placing a hand on the womanâs shoulder. âUnless you found his corpse.â
âNo, no,â she said, shaking her head. âHe ainât... he ainât dead. Heâs alive, but thatâs... thatâs kinds the problem.â
âIs he imprisoned?â Thalril knew nothing about Olmaraâs sibling, but he had his doubts that a farmer would be a high-priority target. âAugmented? Corrupted?â
She shook her head again. âNo, heâs- heâs okay.â
âThen I fail to see the issue.â
She looked up at Thalril, eyes still dripping. âHeâs tryinâ ta- heâs tryinâ ta join them! The Dominion! He says itâs better there, he donât think Exiles have a future!â Crawling towards him, Olmara put her hand on Thalrilâs knee. âHe was sayinâ I should come with him, but- after everythinâ they did- I canât... Believe what I heard...â
Thalril stared, trying to piece together what little he knew about Olmara in his mind. âMaâs dead âcuz of them!â she cried. âThey near took everythinâ we had anâ he still thinks thingsâre gonna be better! What if they find out, what if they find âim? He wonât come back, so heâs...â She began to cry again, and for once, Thalril actually felt bad for her. He reached out, wrapping his arms around the woman as she sobbed into his chest.
âEither way, heâs gone!â she sobbed burying her face into his coat. âH-Heâs either dead or an enemy... Heâs gone, Thalril... I lost my brother...â
Too many families were lost already, thought Thalril. But betrayal might have been worse than death. âI am. Sorry, Olmara. I am sorry.â
THALRIL FOR @agent-lex!
