… (2/2) Does he encourage Evan to climb the tree and jump because he knows Evan will reset to the other timeline or because he’s lonely and thinks Evan will ghost too? What do you see happening to him post C&G? Thank you so much! I love hearing about your writing and characterization process for the story.
ok here's part 2 <3 more below
as I said, the horror of TGOCM is that he's the ghost of a suicidal teen, and now he's being forced to watch another version of himself Not Die and struggle and begin getting better. he's bitter and jealous and grieving and decaying.
his suicide-baiting Evan, then, is not about loneliness or trying to help him. TGOCM believes--has to believe--that nothing will ever get better, bc if things can get better, that means he didn't have to die. that means he died for nothing. he's using Evan to prove that to himself. he's trying to hurt Evan bc it hurts too much to imagine a life in which things Get Better--a life he doesn't get to have. at this point, he's so decayed that he's nothing but that belief
so when Evan tells TGOCM 'I'm so sorry you died and that I couldn't help you, but that doesn't mean I have to die' TGOCM disappears or is released, maybe. bc Evan no longer believes in him--no longer believes that dying is his only option. without that, TGOCM is nothing.
I don't think TGOCM exists post-c&g. He's mostly gone by the orchard. He's there for a minute, I think, in the last chapter when Connor tells Evan about seeing his own ghost as he died. there's a line about feeling pressure in the car, and then that pressure going away. that's the last bit of TGOCM being released, I think. then he's gone. that's the best, most peaceful outcome for him
I don't rlly think of TGOCM as an antagonist. I feel huge tenderness and sadness and compassion for him. I think of him as a condensed embodiment of my own teenaged unhappiness--and how hard and tragic it feels to realize you're going to keep living and your misery can't keep you company forever
thanks for caring <3 I don't say it often, but it astounds and moves me that people still read c&g and care about it, all these years later. I'm really lucky <3

So I drew another thing based off of @charactershoesfic fanfiction "Come and Go" because I fucking love that fanfiction and I love rereading it whenever I can.
I hope y'all like it! The songs in the video are the songs I usually listen to whenever I read the fanfiction because they just fit I dunno. Certain lyrics just make me think of the fanfic and the way TGOCM and Evan interact with one another.
Idk I think the last one was all like emphasising his pointiness, this version highlights his intransigence a little more. So here he is again, inspired entirely by @charactershoesfic and her stunning story (can you tell I'm utterly obsessed? Give it a read and I promise you will be too.)
I just got done reading Come And Go by @charactershoesfic . Well not "done" but caught up to the most recent chapter. And it's so amazing. I have so many new thoughts and opinions on her characterization of Connor and I would love to discuss them but i don't want to get it mixed up with like *Connor Murphy* ya know? So maybe I'll figure out a way to separate them somehow. Anyway basically just tell me whether or not you want content about Come and Go. AND IF YOU HAVEN'T READ IT YOU DEFINITELY SHOULD.
Hi! If you’re up to it, I’d love to hear more about your thoughts on TGOCM. (PS, I love Come and Go; I’ve read it maybe 10 times full through? I can definitely recite parts from memory. It’s incredibly.) He is very interesting and probably the closest thing C&G has to an antagonist. Does his personality keep changing because time is funny or to contrast how Evan feels like time is curricular or because he’s a teenager who has just experienced something traumatic or something else? … (1/2)
oh wow hiiii this made me smile. my sweet toxic ghost teen. gonna answer this in two parts, I think. more below :)
I don't think c&g ever comes down with a super hard, fixed answer about what TGOCM is, because I like the idea that you can read it a couple ways. if you wanna read metaphorically, he's the embodiment of Evan's suicidal ideation. more literally, he's the actual ghost of Connor from the og timeline. I think these two things can co-exist.
But I didn't write c&g as an allegory, so in my mind, all that shit Really Happens and Evan is literally being haunted and TGOCM is real. he's super changeable because he's not experiencing time linearly, and he's decaying as they move farther from the point when TGOCM and Connor diverge. he's becoming less and less like Connor, over time, becoming less of anything. but time is funny so the decay is not linear
as you said, he's the closest thing c&g has to an antagonist (except, of course, for Actual Antagonist Dana P) but I think (hope) the horror of TGOCM comes less from him being actively malicious and more from him being deeply, deeply sad. more on that in part ii <3

Wow I finally read c&g again but in one sitting and I never realized how similar tgocm and Connor actually are? And how time just keeps on going...
ah hi that’s such a fun perspective to hear!! I did try to write them as two sides of the same coin, where tgocm reflects all the angriest and saddest parts of Connor. writing both of them was such a labor of love :,) I love them both
