[mega eyes emoji] -"Since when did you get so smooth?" "Since always" *trips and rips down expensive wall hanging* w sonyamary bc i can't stop laughing at this mental image
this is from this post and iâm dyin bc itâs them
picture this: theyâve gone on several dates at this point, enough that theyâve lost track of the exact number but not enough to be ~official~ yet. but either way, itâs enough that sonya can come over to maryâs place for the first time to watch a movie.
which is why maryâs in the shower while sonyaâs sitting cross-legged on the couch in the living room. sheâd come over when mary was supposed to be home from work, but mary had run late today and wanted to change out of her work clothes before the movie. sonya can hear her singing, muffled by the white noise of the shower and the apartment walls (slightly thicker than the ones in sonyaâs apartment â sheâs a little jealous).
sonya is supposed to be picking a movie to watch. and she was scrolling netflix, for a while, but now sheâs three tabs deep into lists of pickup lines and getting nowhere. she sighs and leans her head against the back of the couch, stretching out her hand automatically to pet her cat before she remembers sheâs at maryâs place, its color scheme of soft greys and purples quite unlike sonyaâs own bright apartment. on the wall next to the couch is sonyaâs favorite bit of decoration here: a tapestry embroidered with a simple lake scene and a deer peeking out from behind a tree. she makes a note to ask mary where itâs from.
sonya sighs. she could justâŚask. it canât be that hard to say âwill you be my girlfriendâ â at least, it canât be any harder than sliding one of these awful pickup lines into a normal conversation â but even the thought makes sonyaâs stomach flutter. in the bathroom, the shower and the singing abruptly stop at once. sonya switches back to netflix and picks something at random.
mary emerges from the bathroom in pajamas, her hair piled on top of her head in a towel. one strand of hair has escaped and is dripping onto maryâs shoulder, and sonya canât stop herself from smiling at how cute she looks.Â
âready?â mary asks
âyeah, iâve got something,â sonya says, hoping whatever she picked isnât awful.Â
âgreat! i have popcorn,â mary says as she moves to the couch. she unwraps the towel from her hair and lets it fall, still damp, over her shoulders. âi just have to braid my hair firstâ
âoh, i can make it. where is it?â
âtop shelf of the pantryâ
sonya has to stand on tiptoe to reach the top shelf, but she finds the popcorn box on the first try and puts a packet in the microwave. as she waits for it to heat up, she watches mary braid her hair: the practiced movements of her hands as she knits the strands together. sonya swallows. theyâve held hands, theyâve kissed, but always out and about â in restaurants, on boardwalks. itâs different here. she wonders if she can hold maryâs hand, or share a blanket â or even, in an unprecedented move, put her head on maryâs shoulder.
the microwave beeps and sonya realizes she hasnât been paying attention. but the popcorn isnât burned, so she pours it into a bowl and brings it back to the couch. mary finishes the final bit of braid and reaches for the bowl, but sonya holds it back. she swallows and tries to act more confident than she feels.
ânuh-uh.â she leans down and offers her cheek. âyou owe me a kiss for making thisâ
mary grins. âitâs my popcorn.â
âcâmon, let me at least tell tasha a pretty girl kissed me tonight.âÂ
âsince when did you get so smooth?â mary teases.
sonya leans forward even further and opens her mouth to say âsince alwaysâ but suddenly feels herself teetering off balance. nearly dropping the popcorn, she flings out one arm to steady herself, latches onto the tapestry, and goes down in a heap, covered in tapestry and popcorn.Â
maryâs laughter is the first thing sonya hears after the popcorn bowl stops clattering across the floor. when she pulls the tapestry off her face, sonya tries to look disgruntled, but gives in to laughter herself. itâs a while before the popcorn is swept up, a new batch is made, and the movie starts, but when mary tentatively puts her arm around sonya and kisses her on the forehead, sonya thinks it was probably worth it.Â
