picture this: they’ve gone on several dates at this point, enough that they’ve lost track of the exact number but not enough to be ~official~ yet. but either way, it’s enough that sonya can come over to mary’s place for the first time to watch a movie.

which is why mary’s in the shower while sonya’s sitting cross-legged on the couch in the living room. she’d come over when mary was supposed to be home from work, but mary had run late today and wanted to change out of her work clothes before the movie. sonya can hear her singing, muffled by the white noise of the shower and the apartment walls (slightly thicker than the ones in sonya’s apartment – she’s a little jealous).

sonya is supposed to be picking a movie to watch. and she was scrolling netflix, for a while, but now she’s three tabs deep into lists of pickup lines and getting nowhere. she sighs and leans her head against the back of the couch, stretching out her hand automatically to pet her cat before she remembers she’s at mary’s place, its color scheme of soft greys and purples quite unlike sonya’s own bright apartment. on the wall next to the couch is sonya’s favorite bit of decoration here: a tapestry embroidered with a simple lake scene and a deer peeking out from behind a tree. she makes a note to ask mary where it’s from.

sonya sighs. she could just…ask. it can’t be that hard to say “will you be my girlfriend” – at least, it can’t be any harder than sliding one of these awful pickup lines into a normal conversation – but even the thought makes sonya’s stomach flutter. in the bathroom, the shower and the singing abruptly stop at once. sonya switches back to netflix and picks something at random.

mary emerges from the bathroom in pajamas, her hair piled on top of her head in a towel. one strand of hair has escaped and is dripping onto mary’s shoulder, and sonya can’t stop herself from smiling at how cute she looks. 

“ready?” mary asks

“yeah, i’ve got something,” sonya says, hoping whatever she picked isn’t awful. 

“great! i have popcorn,” mary says as she moves to the couch. she unwraps the towel from her hair and lets it fall, still damp, over her shoulders. “i just have to braid my hair first”

“oh, i can make it. where is it?”

“top shelf of the pantry”

sonya has to stand on tiptoe to reach the top shelf, but she finds the popcorn box on the first try and puts a packet in the microwave. as she waits for it to heat up, she watches mary braid her hair: the practiced movements of her hands as she knits the strands together. sonya swallows. they’ve held hands, they’ve kissed, but always out and about – in restaurants, on boardwalks. it’s different here. she wonders if she can hold mary’s hand, or share a blanket – or even, in an unprecedented move, put her head on mary’s shoulder.

the microwave beeps and sonya realizes she hasn’t been paying attention. but the popcorn isn’t burned, so she pours it into a bowl and brings it back to the couch. mary finishes the final bit of braid and reaches for the bowl, but sonya holds it back. she swallows and tries to act more confident than she feels.

“nuh-uh.” she leans down and offers her cheek. “you owe me a kiss for making this”

mary grins. “it’s my popcorn.”

“c’mon, let me at least tell tasha a pretty girl kissed me tonight.” 

“since when did you get so smooth?” mary teases.

sonya leans forward even further and opens her mouth to say “since always” but suddenly feels herself teetering off balance. nearly dropping the popcorn, she flings out one arm to steady herself, latches onto the tapestry, and goes down in a heap, covered in tapestry and popcorn. 

I’ve also seen all three and Hamil/ton will always be my fave but I’m glad you enjoyed it!!!

Yeah that seems to be the theme of the day. As to vacations—Taylor will be gone August 6-12. I don’t know definitive dates for anyone else.

Depends on what you mean by winter. I’ve heard Taylor’s contract is up in January (although I can’t confirm any reliable sources). I’d be very surprised if she didn’t at least extend.

this is so obvious but like i have to pick her singing voice?? i remember listening to comet the first time and being like “i think i don’t like this” but i got to sonya alone and was like O H i like this one! and similarly with ghost quartet i heard it was weird so i was expecting it, but it was still hero that ended up convincing me to buy the soundtrack.

and like after listening to all her solo music and her prairie empire stuff i just?? love it?? her voice is so unique and sad and beautiful it’s so Good
