I know plenty of non-black people have curly hair and I'm not saying that the only kind of curly hair is tight and coily. However the amount of people with wavey thick hair that say they have "curly hair" is actively harmful to people (mostly black people) with actually curly hair. Texturism has been a problem for a very long time so I'm very sensitive about what people call their hair. I've been ridiculed millions of times for having thicker or loser hair then people expect me to have (I'm mixed it's different textures in different areas) and especially when I was younger it was absolutely devastating for people to act like I wasn't black enough or white enough to be in the in group. This new definition of curly hair completely skews peoples view of what curly hair actually is and actually means. This causes an increase in bullying and harassment and just straight racism. We wake up everyday with curly hair unless we get it straightened. I'm not saying having to use a shit ton of product for your hair to curl is a bad thing ,style your hair however you want, but please don't start acting like you're an expert in curly hair. I feel there's a big difference and I wish there was different language that wasn't invented to sell hair products but as far as I know there really isn't. To restate yes non-black people can have curly hair however the shift in language I've seen in my life time alone is absolutely exacerbating texturism and racism. Also the reason I don't use the whole 1a 1b or whatever system is because hair can't fit in just those categories as always things are more complicated and more nuanced then that. At the same time straight, wavy, curly, coily, and kinky aren't enough either. It's complicated, I know but especially in professional spaces we need to be more precise with our language because our language deeply affects our views on each other. I'm not really a hair guy so I can't come up with new terms but I trust other POC and people with curly hair to be a bit more equipped for that part of it. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk 🫰🏽
