You discovered at a very early age that you could pull people’s souls out of their bodies when they were on the brink of death. You first did it to you mother as she slipped away due to illness. you hold their life essence in your chest and it feels like a  flame. It could feed you forever. because of it you can draw out your life. so long as you linger like a vulture over the nearly dead and swoop in at the right moment you can get a few extra years add to you life. And if there’s an extinction event you can get enough fuel to last you eons.

THE NECROMANCER - you know they fear you and honestly you don’t blame them. you feel you deserve to be feared and frankly it’s flattering. but you know that if they can just get past their childish worries and see that you two are so different you could be a powerful duo. maybe even powerful enough to topple the ruler once the job is finished.

THE RULER - you have every intention of overthrowing the ruler once the flood comes, they will do the dirt work and channel the spell. and you will reap the rewards, kill them, take their soul, and then take their place as ruler. and you are certain they have no idea, you think you are far to clever for that.

THE HERETIC - they make you laugh and you haven’t laughed in so very long. granted you are laughing at their expense, but whenever they look at you in questioning you try to brush it off. you don’t want them knowing that you actually think their life is a joke, but sometimes you can’t help yourself around someone so absurd.

You could have spent your life as a normal creature of the forest if your mother loved you. You could have died on the forest floor if the anarchist hadn’t pitied you. And now you are stuck in this cursed form halfway between human and animal, just trying to find a place for yourself. You try not to think of yourself as a monster despite what the people sneer at you. But when you get caught mid-shift, something goes wrong, and you hurt people - innocent people. You just want to be normal, to start again, and maybe the hero that the people love.

THE ANARCHIST - They are like a mother to you and you love them more than anyone in the world. Granted, you’ve never had anyone else to love. You are thankful to them for saving your life, and you know they did the best they could with the magic they had. But part of you resents them for transforming you and keeping you like a pet on a leash.

THE EXECUTIONER - It’s rare for you to actually fear someone, and you would have thought a sensible dealer of death would be someone you’d get along with well. Especially as a creature that looks forward to the day your soul can exist this cursed vessel. But something about them makes your skin crawl.

THE NECROMANCER - They have actually been surprisingly kind to you, and it’s nice to have a friendship that feels normal. You wouldn’t know what it’s like to have a friend but you’ve observed it before and this feels close enough to make you smile at the thought. At the very least they don’t recoil at the sight of you.

You once heard the question ‘Is it better to be hated or loved?’ and you know the answer is that it is best to be feared. It does not matter if that is a small degree of intimidation or mortal panic, but everyone needs to know that you are more powerful than them. You delight in watching people shake in their boots, to really feel what it is to be alive. And although your magic died out long ago, you don’t need it anymore to strike fear.

THE ANARCHIST - Your twin was your soulmate growing up, you leaned on each other to endure the hatred of the world that left you abandoned and reviled. THE EXECUTIONER- You find their stillness aggravating. You don’t trust how they keep such a lid on their emotions. You want to find a way in, you want to break them and see them cry. It’s always the ones who hold out longest that break the hardest. And you will delight in watching them crumble.

THE HUNTER - If there was ever a chance of you gaining what they call a ‘best friend’ you know for certain it would be the hunter. They are feral and exciting and you get so much joy out of watching the fear in their prey’s eyes as they tear their victims apart. They are a work of art to you.

You have always had this bloodlust, ever since you came into the world. All you’ve ever wanted to do is feel your fingernails pierce the flesh and tears through sinew. It’s raw and it’s animalistic, but that really all you are at this point. If you ever had any humanity you lost it. Now you are all gnashing teeth and wild eyes. But there’s a string of something left in you that makes you still want to be loved or maybe just cared for. It makes you think that you could possibly care for something if someone taught you how.

THE FEARMONGER - you don’t really know what it means to have a friend but you are glad to have someone that doesn’t fear you. it’s nice to have a partner in crime that can terrorize cities with you. you feel you have a lot in common, but you are also jealous of the family and connections they have and seem to waste.

THE HOARDER - you have so much fun messing with them. you like to ruin their day just to see their eyes bulge. you promised the ruler you wouldn’t kill anyone on the team so this is the closest you can get: slowly annoying the heretic to a point where you can hear their frustrated heart beating in their chest.

THE HERETIC - the heretic is the best person you’ve ever met in your life. they are strange and exiled like you. even in a group of outcasts you feel like a different breed but at least the heretic seems to be in the same boat. you like that there’s someone on the team who is as unhinged as you.

You emerged from the mud. You have never known what it was like to be fed by a silver spoon, in fact, you’ve never used a spoon at all. You are more wild animal than woman, but there is still the instincts in your gut to care for a select few. You have those who you love and everyone else can died and be damned. And anyone who dares give you a side eye is met with swift and painful retribution.

THE BEAST - the beast is your child. not literally, but you saved their life when they were merely a baby and you gave them the opportunity to take on a human form with your help. they are dependent on you, and you love that. in some ways you know you’ve trapped them and cursed them, but you convince yourself it’s for the best.

THE RULER -  one of the few beings you have met that has earned your respect and loyalty. you admire the fear they can strike into the hearts of others and you think that not only are they correct, they are going to convince everyone else of the same thing. and nothing feels better than being on the winning side ( especially since it’s a new feeling for you ).

THE FEARMONGER - you haven’t spoken with your twin  in nearly a century, but when you agreed to give your life to the cause and to help the ruler in any way you could, you knew that your twin would be the ultimate asset to the team. so you recruited them, and while things are still tense, it is good to see their face.

You didn’t start out with much but you’d be damned if that stopped you from rising to greatness. You were always good at creating something out of nothing. And while some might look at your practices as ones of ill repute but all you do is to feed the hungry and save the dying. And occasionally you bring the dying back to life, but only those you believe are worthy, died before their time, or died for an unjust reason. Some people say it’s wrong but you’ve seen healers pull souls back from the brink of death and no one bats an eye. What’s so wrong with being a little late?

THE POLITICIAN - you met her when you were just a child, and it’s been years since you saw her last but not a day goes by without you thinking of her. whether it’s long lamentations or just a flash of her face, you regret leaving without saying goodbye. you’d never admit it but you’ve turned down many possibilities for love, all in the hope that one day you’ll see her again. 

THE COLLECTOR - you are horrified by them. something about the way they speak of human souls makes your gut churn. you can hardly look them in the eyes. it’s a fear unlike anything you’ve felt before. and when they put their arm around you and croon in your ear, speaking of deals you want to run and hide. 

THE LIBRARIAN - you wouldn’t call them an old friend, but you used to do a lot of research at the library where they worked and so you know each other well. perhaps to well, because they seemed to be suspicious of the books you were reading. you can’t be certain they were the one who ratted you out but whenever you catch their eye they look guilty an afraid.
