Just curious, because I don't come across many other people who like ASBAR to discuss headcanons with: if Miller had been allowed to continue the book, how do you think he would have had Batman-In-Name-Only and Dick Grayson-Age-12 split up in a way that would lead to the relationship portrayed in The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Again?
I will always talk about ASBAR omg. Thatās a great question, and Iām actually writing an essay on that topic, so I will try not to use up all my words now. XD
Basically, I donāt think ASBAR and TDKSA really fit into each other. I think theyāre clearly intended to (the Stockholm Syndrome is there, as well as Dickās homicidal tendencies), but something changed in Millerās perception of Dick between these two comics, and he gave him a much more sympathetic portrayal in ASBAR, thatās a long shot from his grotesque and frankly spiteful portrayal in TDKSA earlier.Ā
I think the future in TDKSA is still possible though, in a ādarkest timelineā sort of way. With the two of them in ASBAR, it could go a couple of ways. They do reach more of an understanding when they embrace over the Graysonsā grave, and Bruce realizes that Dick is still a child that needs to grieve, and vows to do better by him. Itās entirely possible that his good intentions go to hell, though, with this Batman especially. Dick is clearly traumatized and has adapted to using violence in order to cope with his feelings, so he might go down a much darker path than usual.
In TDKSA, it is implied that Bruce is disgusted by Dickās āweaknessā for him (i.e. his fixation on him). And so what I think is that Dick becomes very dependent on Bruce (Stockholm Syndrome hello), and Bruce, not equipped to deal with that, keeps him at armās length, emotionally wrecking him further. Not getting Bruceās approval (or his affection) ultimately drives Dick crazy, leading to Bruce firing him.
(You have to remember that in this āverse, Dick doesnāt get officially taken in by Bruce, he gets āsent awayā instead, which essentially makes Dick his hostage since he canāt really show his face anywhere. Maybe Frank Miller planned to remedy that later, but this is the situation.)
I imagine that Dick goes underground after that (this is the scene in TDKR where Bruce says he and Dick donāt talk anymore). And, completely obsessed with getting back at Batman, he subjects himself to a series of enhancements by mad scientists (which doesnāt help his mental state) in order to prove his worth and also facilitate his revenge.
Anyway, this is what I could imagine happening. This is also not what I think we would have seen in the comic, though. Frankly, I have no idea where ASBAR would have gone. When the series stops, we have the Joker planning something nefarious, we have Jim and Barbara going through a family crisis, we have Batman and Black Canary hooking up, we have the JLA planning to do something against Batman, and we have Dick running around in his first week as Robin. These are all loose plot threads, and I honestly donāt know where they wouldāve ended up. Maybe with Batman and Robin on the run from the JLA after what happened with Green Lantern? Idk.
Of course, as far as I am concerned, the series would have turned into a sparkling will-they-wonāt-they screwball comedy featuring Bruce and Dick, but youād have to ask Miller if Iām in the ballpark. XD
I'd love to, thanks for asking! I have a hard time writing about this, because I get way too excite about Millerverse and ASBAR in particular, but I will try. XD
(freedom-heiress asked me my opinions about ASBAR a while ago, and I was thinking so many things at once that I couldn't even reply. So this is for you, too!)
Big Fat Miller Rant (With Pics!), Part I: Dicks, Pussies, And Assholes
First of all, Frank Miller is a writer whose Batman stuff I enjoy, because I think it's wildly imaginative, often smart and always ambitious, but whose personal opinions (which are reflected in his work) I can't stand. There are a lot of running themes in his entire Dark Knight output that I roll my eyes or gnash my teeth at pretty much constantly, and that are so far removed from my personal beliefs that they're almost kind of a curiosity to me.Ā
There's this dogmatic approach to what "manliness" means in these books, as well as some strict ideas about how "great men" (and it's always men) should relate to the rest of humanity, who are fearful and hateful and stupid and need to be led, or rather, ruled over. As Batman says in TDKR: "[ā¦] the world only makes sense when you force it to", or as you can also put it, "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"
