You, daughter of Gael Targaryen, daughter of King Daeron II.
Your mother died shortly after your birth. Infection, they said. These things happen when women give birth in Westeros.
Your father, a Dornish prince, did not last much longer. Grief took him before you could learn his face.
After that, it was Prince Baelor, known as Breakspear, who took you in his arms. Not as a favor, but as a duty. He raised you as his daughter. You grew up alongside Valarr and Matarys, slept in the same corridors, learned to behave like a princess.
And even though you were not Baelorâs biological child, you fit among his children, since your features also had dominant Dornish traits with small Valyrian characteristics.
You were raised like a princess, but watched as a possibility. There were always extra glances, long silences whenever your name was mentioned in the small council. You grew up knowing that sooner or later, someone would decide your future for you.
And it happened, in secret. Your father, Baelor, never spoke openly, but he had made an agreement with Maekar. When the right time came, you could marry your cousin, Daeron. They wanted to see if you and Daeron could work together, to get close, to learn to understand each other before any official promise.
That is why your father allowed you to go to the Ashford Meadow tournament.
He did not explain much. He only said it was time for you to leave the court. To see people. To be seen. Maekar agreed. Daeron would also be there, accompanied by his younger brother, Aegon. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
You traveled with the princes' retinue. Slept in tents, listened to stories around the fire, observed Daeron closely for the first time. He talked too much, thought too fast, always seemed ready to leave even when he was standing still. Still, he was kind to you. Attentive. Curious.
But Daeron did not want to participate in the tournament. He was the one who suggested leaving the road for a night. He said he knew an inn along the way and lied, saying it would be quick. Egg seemed excited. You hesitated but ended up agreeing. He was a prince, a man. You were under his responsibility, and your father had always told you that women should follow what men asked.
Before you even reached the inn, Daeron had already taken a razor. He shaved Eggâs head completely.
âIs this really necessary? â you asked, already dressed in the peasant clothes, looking at him finishing shaving the last strands from Eggâs head.
Daeron paused for a moment, the razor still in hand, studying you seriously but without losing his playful tone:
âYes... and I will have to do the same to you. Even if your hair is not completely silver like Eggâs, those strands still draw too much attention. We cannot take risks.â
You swallowed hard.
âBut⌠it didnât have to be so much.â you murmured, trying to sound firm.
He smiled sideways, a smile that seemed to slide slowly. It was not exactly for you, but somehow it felt only for you.
âIt has to. I need no one to know who you and Egg are. You understand, donât you? â
You nodded but could not look at him. The touch of the blade, the closeness, the certainty in his tone⌠it was hard.
âBesides, you are still beautiful even dressed like a commoner. We could even pretend we are husband and wife, and Egg here would be our son.â Daeron said, laughing softly, imagining.
Egg, running his small hand over his bare head, feeling the lack of hair, muttered:
âDaeron! You said youâd only cut a little! â
Ignoring his little brotherâs âtantrum,â Daeron focused on shaving your side strands and the nape of your head. But since only the lower strands were cut, the hair on top still covered the shaved part, hiding what had been cut.
The inn was smaller than you had imagined. It was nothing like you expected a "poor place" to be. The walls were made of uneven stone, the windows small and dusty, the roof curved from old weathered wood. The smell of smoke, stale wine, and burnt bread hit your nose before you even stepped inside. There was a small cracked wooden counter, a few crooked tables scattered across the dirt floor, and an old dog sleeping in a corner.
Daeron started drinking before even sitting down. Mug after mug. He laughed loudly, told exaggerated stories, sometimes kissed your cheek, and spoke about dreams of you two together.
You and Egg exchanged glances. Without saying a word, you decided it would be better to stay outside after Daeron passed out with his head on the table.
Outside the inn, Egg met "Ser Duncan." You were busy in the innâs stable, sitting on the ground with your knees pulled to your chest, still annoyed at the strands Daeron had shaved and thinking about all the scenarios you imagined when your father finally noticed you were gone, wondering what he would do, what he would say.
Dunk finally met you when he was about to leave, heading to the stable to get his horses, only to find the little bald boy again on top of his horse, playing, and you feeding the other horses.
To prevent Dunk from scolding Egg, you apologized for him and lied, saying he was your little brother and that he could be quite playful. Duncan looked dumbstruck by you, feeling foolish for scolding a child, especially the pretty sister of the little boy.
But that did not stop him from leaving in search of his belongings. You even tried to convince him to take you and Egg along, even though Daeron had told you not to leave his side, but now he was drunk and sleeping inside the inn, and it was the first time you were on your own, wanting to enjoy a bit of the small freedom.
âSer, could we come with you? Me and my little brother, he could serve as your squire if you like and IâŚâ you stopped, trying to think of something useful you could offer, but Dunk did not wait for you to finish.
âI could... but I would only take you, the boy would stay. â Dunk said, feeling a little bold to say it.
Egg raised an eyebrow at that and looked at you. Of course, you refused the âofferâ if it meant Egg would stay here with a completely drunk Daeron. Dunk seemed disappointed at your refusal but gave you two coins, one for you and one for Egg, and then left.
Making his journey alone, that was what he planned. After that, Egg had the idea to follow him in a passing cart.
The next day, Daeron woke with a pounding headache, made worse when he could not find you or Egg. Furious, he cornered the innkeeper woman against the wall, putting his dagger near her throat.
âWhere are they? I PAID you to watch them, woman! â
The woman whimpered nervously, completely afraid. âIâm sorry, Milord, I just got distracted. I only saw the girl and the boy leave after you passed out... and... then that tall knight appeared.â
Before she could finish explaining, Daeron interrupted her.
âTall? That knight took them?â Daeron asked, not waiting for an answer, grabbing his things and leaving the old inn completely out of himself.
Besides losing his own brother, he had lost you too, and he could already imagine how furious your uncle Baelor would be when he found out.
