Re: Kurogane's sword - If the spell is only on his artificial arm, it could be so that in the rare case that he has to do another Celes-style magical exchange, he won't need to give up his other arm for it. His left arm is the only one free here, though, so it's possible that this version of the spell lets him summon from either one and he's just choosing the more convenient option. Also, in Celes the hilt faced his right hand, here it faces his left - I wonder if his intent can control that?
I honestly think it's a different spell all together. Like I'm no wizard but I imagine there is a difference between casting a spell on living flesh and casting it on wire and metal. And, again no magician here, since Fai is more than twice as powerful as he was when he did the spell pre-Celes it's possible it's a "better" one now that they've got time and power to work with it.
The "extra arm" point is a good one though. I highly doubt any of them think they're reenter a situation anything like what happened in Celes but I can see Fai being worried about it and not waiting to chance Kurogane having no arms. On the other hand (no pun intended) there's the fact that Fai is very much aware how it bothers Kurogane to not have is sword around. Maybe while they were waiting for his sword Fai kept it? Or Kurogane had a pendant of some sort he could summon Ginryuu from? Mokona, through no fault of her own, has proven to be stoppable when it comes to summoning things and it would bother Kurogane I'm sure.Â
