âLiving with people has been surprisingly nice. Mina likes to take care of people, me and Conner mostly, and Con is always up for a spar, or just to hang out. They respect that I donât talk much, sometimes. Iâve been cooking a lot. They never had real Chinese food before I made some, but they both love it and itâs kind of comfort food for me.â

Balcony Coffee
âWell this isnât at all suspicious,â Kathryn said, and sat on the balcony railing to watch him. âWith the bleeding, and the costume.â
âTo be fair,â the vigilante rasped as he wrapped white gauze around his arm, and covered it with a strip of darker fabric to hide the white. âI didnât think anyone actually used these balconies.â
âAre balconies usually decorative?â
âMore often than you would think. Are you going to call the police?â
âProbably. But not until you get a good head start.â
That made him laugh, and he relaxed enough to dig out more bandages, and a half-used tube of antiseptic.
âPeople think youâre actually my brother, James,â Kathryn said after a while. At this distance she could tell he wasnât. James was a solid inch or three shorter, and his eyes were blue. This man had green eyes, and enough muscle for Kathryn to check him out, even if he looked like worst kind of bad idea. âYou tend to show up in the same places at the same times.â
âHow do you know Iâm not him?â The vigilante asked, and hissed when he found a particularly sore spot. âIâm on your balcony, after all.â
âJames lost a fight with the stairs two days ago. His leg is in a cast,â Kathryn rolled her eyes. Poor James. She loved her big brother, but he was a coward, and would never be the sort to fight her battles for her. âI once saw him break his own wrist trying to punch a man, and then had an asthma attack on top of the broken wrist.â
âAlright,â the vigilante started to laugh, looking much better now that he was bandaged and mostly not bleeding anymore. âIâm not your brother. I should be going. The police will be looking for me.â
âIf you promise not to shoot anyone, you can come inside and have coffee,â Kathryn said, and slid off the balcony. âYou can even keep the mask.â
âYouâre serious?â He stared at her, no longer laughing. âYou donât know me. I could hurt you.â
âGuys who say that usually arenât the sort to hurt women. Besides, you beat the crap out of that politician last week. The one who walked after all those rape victims came forward.â
âThat was fun,â he cracked a smile and hauled himself upright. âHell, why not? God knows I could use some coffee, and the cops probably wonât expect me to go to ground this close to the crime scene.â
âWhat were you doing, anyway?â Kathryn wondered aloud as she led him downstairs to the kitchen. âTheyâre not usually this quick on the draw.â
âI found that girl,â he shrugged uncomfortably. âThe one who was kidnapped a few days ago? One of the local drug kingpins had her as leverage over her dad. So I... may have killed a couple guys and dropped her off at the precinct.â
Kathryn winced. On one hand, murder bad. On the other hand, anyone who would kidnap a teenager probably had it coming.
âWell,â she decided and turned the coffee pot on. âThe kid is okay?â
âRattled and bruised, but whole,â he confirmed, and sat, somewhat awkwardly, at the bar. âSheâll be okay in time. Oh. I didnât get your name.â
âKathryn Delor,â Kathryn answered, and reached across the counter to shake his hand, pointedly ignoring all his weapons. âDo you have a name?â
That made him laugh, and he took the coffee she proffered with an expression of sincere gratitude. âThe newspapers have been calling me Shadowcloak.â
âIâm not using your drama queen stage name.â
He laughed so hard he choked on his coffee, and Kathryn stared him down expectantly.
âGrey,â he said when he managed to get himself under control. âHow about Grey?â
Kathryn made a show of considering it. He watched her, a wry half-smile on his lips.
âI suppose it will do,â she decided, and passed him the sugar. âNice to meet you, Grey.â

Where did Powers come from? My grandfather says that in the later years of World War two, there was an internment camp in China, run by the Japanese. They did terrible things to people in the name of science. One of those experiments revealed something in the human genome, and a compound to activate it. Now, about two percent of the population has powers. Some of them work as Guardians to protect people from super-powered criminals.
Criminals like my family.

Colliding Galaxies
It turned out that getting Neutron and her opposite, Quasar, together was significantly harder than expected.
The largest problem being, how to do it without taking either of them through populated areas.
Neutron was lethal at ten miles at this point, and Ice thought that Quasar was probably just as bad.
At least both of them, although surprised to be receiving telepathic messages out of the blue, were willing to work with them. Sweetwater didnât know what they would do if one of the Elementals refused.
âTheyâre not the type,â Inferno said, absolutely sure of himself. The situation had him and Ice both spooked, and he had an arm around his chillier half at almost all times. âIf we get a problem child, weâll know it immediately,â
âHow?â Sweetwater wondered, and watched as messages, transposed by fast-typing telepaths, popped up on the screen. It was the only way for the two electro-mag Elementals to communicate, but they were both very willing to do so once they had that option. âWhat makes you so sure?â
âYou can tell because they tried to limit themselves,â Ice said, and twined his fingers together with Infernoâs. They were so close that their powers were almost totally neutralized, and only the faintest wisp of steam curled between them. âNeutron was looking for a faraday cage to contain her blackouts. Quasar went north where his radiation couldnât kill anyone.â
âIf they didnât want a fix, they would head for cities and we would have a different problem,â Inferno finished. He pressed his nose into Iceâs hair. âIf that happened, we would try and bring them down. At our worst, we could do something about them.â
A battle of the titans.
Sweetwater was desperately glad that wasnât happening, for all that they were right. While their partnership kept them both restrained, if they truly let themselves off the hook, Ice and Inferno could take on the new Elementals. It just happened that the manifestations of their respective Powers were more controllable than the new pairâs.
Of course, they would also probably die doing it. Sweetwater wondered at that kind of sacrifice. She hadnât expected it of them.
Ice gave her the side-eye and huffed his annoyance.
âIf the world dies,â he explained as if she was somewhat dim. âSo do we. If either of them go critical- and theyâre close- we die anyway. Might as well save the world, right?â
âRight,â Sweetwater agreed. That made sense, she supposed, and also explained why Ice and Inferno were being even more touchy than usual. âAre we ready to do this?â
âI think we are,â Ice said, and turned his attention on the view screens. More than a dozen teleporters and object movers- a very rare power that could move an object from one place to another- were gathered together. âAlright, listen up. The plan is to daisy-chain these two together. Pair up, one Mover to one âPorter. âPorters, grab them, Port to the next Mover in the line.â
He flicked a laser pointed up and over a map, detailing reach set of coordinates. âMovers, do not wait to send the Elementals onward to the next âPorter. As soon as you see them, kick them along the line. Speed matters. They know this isnât going to be pleasant, so donât waste your time on kindness. It might cost your life.â
The plan was relatively simple. Teleporters and Movers would pop in, grab the Neutron and Quasar, and bring them together in a predetermined location.
Executing the plan was more complicated.
Because of their radiation, both Elementals tended to overload whoever they were with faster than a long Port could complete. Instead, they would be making lots of little jumps.
Everyone was in radiation gear that would, hopefully, buy them a few crucial moments.
Ice was not optimistic, and made it clear to all of their volunteers that this might easily be a suicide mission.
They volunteered anyway. People changed when the world itself was in peril. Sweetwater was proud of them.
âYou think this will work?â she asked Ice as the teleporters vanished to scatter themselves across carefully-planned trajectories. Only the first two stayed, waiting for the signal that everyone else was ready. âWeâll only get one shot at this once theyâre both out of containment.â
âItâs a risk no matter what,â Ice said, and nodded as they got confirmation. âEveryone is in place?â
âLooks like it,â Inferno checked, and double checked. âYeah. Weâre set.â
âGood luck,â Ice said seriously to their two starting teleporters, who had the longest range, and the fastest jump-times. It was their job to write the two Elementals with range of the rest of the chain. âGo save the world.â
The two teleporters vanished.
Far-Seers stood ready, watching each step of the way and projecting what they saw on screens, designed for this exact sort of situation. The kind of situation where technology failed, and they were left scrambling for options.
Sweetwater held her breath as the chain began. On satellite, Quasarâs vortex of radiation began to unravel, poisonous red fading into softer blues and greens, and then the images came hard and fast, as everyone worked together to get the two Elementals together with a minimum cost in human lives.
Each landing point was left burned and irradiated, but that they had planned for. The landing points were remote, and easily managed. Containment teams moved in as soon as the Elementals were gone, and began cleanup immediately.
âWhere are we putting them?â Sweetwater wanted to know. She had been in charge of getting the teleporters together, and while someone must have told her the final destination, she didnât remember it.
âAbandoned military test site,â Inferno supplied, watching as people blinked in and out of sight almost too fast to spot. Shimmers in the air marked the thought-quick trail both chains blazed across the world. âSnowflake, you made arrangements?â
âThe place is already closed off, and we dropped some supplies to make things more comfortable,â Ice said, watching closely as each teleporter collected their Mover and popped into containment themselves as soon as their part was done, ready for decontamination. âNo casualties yet.â
âBetter than we hoped,â Sweetwater muttered, and sent a prayer out into the ether. They needed all the help they could get. âWill they react like you two?â
âWill they form a relationship you mean?â Ice asked, and didnât look at her, although he curled a hand possessively around Infernoâs bicep. âMaybe. Depends on them. I suspect one of the reasons we show up in pairs is because we happen to be very compatible with our opposite.â
âLike soulmates?â
âMaybe. Itâs not like thereâs a huge sample size to examine,â Ice shrugged as he drifted farther and farther into Infernoâs space and was welcomed there. âFar as I know, me and Inferno are the only two to survive longer than a few weeks, besides these ones.â
âTheyâre close,â Inferno interrupted their conversation. He was right. Sweetwater looked up just in time to see the last Mover reach out and send Quasar, who was only visible in flickers, to his final destination. Everything around him immediately began fading out of side, and everything metal, from the beams to the screws under his feet, began to glow, and then melt. âThereâs one...â
Neutron popped in a moment later, and then Quasar was sweeping her into a crushing hug. She buried her face in his shoulder and held on even as they sank to the ground, as close as they could be and still be wearing clothes.
A shockwave exploded in every direction, and Sweetwater was very glad their landing location was miles away from anything human. The sky lit up as streamers of aurora ignited through the cloudless sky.
âTheyâre like us,â Inferno decided as cheers broke out through the room. Finally he allowed himself a gruff, relieved smile. âThey didnât have as long to think about it, but I bet you anything theyâll be together inside a day.â
âInside an hour,â Ice said, and smirked smugly. He had a right to be proud. After all, the plan had been his, and it worked better than they ever dared hope. âWord to the wise, leave them alone for a while. Itâll take a week or two for them to balance out, and theyâll be unstable until they do. Also, weâre reading a whole lot of Hawking radiation, but thatâs not something we need to worry aboutâ
âWill they be able to control their abilities like you do once theyâre balanced?â Sweetwater suspected so and hoped not. For all their usefulness in this crisis, Ice and Inferno were still criminals. If Neutron and Quasar decided to do the same, there would be no stopping them. âDeliberately I mean?â
âProbably,â Ice said, and turned to get a better hold on Inferno, who wrapped them both in his coat. âNeutronâs a physicist, and Quasar was involved in some interesting matter manipulation studies before he vanished and turned into what he is now. I imagine theyâre going to want to study their shared condition before they go looking for something else to do.â
âWeâll deal with that when we get there,â Sweetwater decided, and watched as Neutron and Quasar managed to move inside the small, but comfortable housing to wait out the worst of their new situation. âWe have time to worry about it, thanks to you.â

 âI need something from you.â
Adamine settled herself at the table and sized up the man across from her. He was handsome and well-muscled, and his hair fell in his eyes.
âWhatever you want, the answer is no,â he replied shortly, with a trace of his native Mandarin flavoring his words. âI donât work with cops and youâre a damn fool for asking if you know who I am.â
âI do know who you are, and thatâs why Iâm asking,â she replied, and pulled out a folder. âI know your name is Renshu Zhang, and that your other name is Firestorm. I know youâre the most powerful Fire Power in history, and that you probably have a minor Strength factor on top of it. I know that youâre Ignitionâs most notorious enforcer, and I know you have a soft spot for children.â
It was the last pat that really caught his attention, as she hoped it would.
âKids?â he questioned slowly, and eyed her as he sat back in his chair. He caught the eye of one of the waitresses, who brought him a beer moments later. âWhat do kids have to do with it?â
âWe got word that the Blue Crush Gang is branching out,â Adamine told him shortly as he finally took the folder from her. The gang was all water-powers and Renshuâs own Fire-themed family was at war with them. But the thing was, the Zhang family didnât deal in human trafficking, and was sometimes known to step in if they caught someone else at it. It was a gamble to reach out to Renshu, but the payoff might be more than worth it. âTheyâre getting a shipment of children and young women some time in the next month.â
His eyes flickered as he read through the documents, and then jumped back to her. âAnd what do you want me to do about it?â
âIt would be a serious blow to Blue Crush to loose the shipment,â she pointed out and shook her head when a waitress gestured at her with a menu. âAnd I donât think youâre the kind of guy to let a bunch of children be sold into god-knows-what.â
âWhat gives you that idea?â
âYou once put out a gang-related house fire to save a sleepover no one even knew about. Your family might deal in drugs and bootlegging, but I donât think youâre big on slavery.â
That silenced him, and he read through the file again.
âAssuming I might be interested,â he hedged casually. âYou know I would have to get authorization before I could say anything about our operations. Ignition likes me, but if he got the slightest hint I was playing both sides, he would kill me in a heartbeat.â
âThatâs why I approached you here,â Adamine admitted honestly. She waved at the small Chinese restaurant around them. âI know perfectly well who owns this place. I thought you might have less trouble if your people knew what was going on from the beginning.â
âAnd what about your people?â
It was a valid question. A turncoat cop was a problem. A turncoat cop with the highest gravity-manipulation Talent on record was a national threat.
âMy captain knows where I am,â she explained comfortably. âI have full authorization to work with you within reason on this sort of activity.â
He drank his beer and thought about it, but he hadnât said no yet, and hadnât set himself on fire yet, and so it was still possible he would work with her.
Adamine hoped so. The Zhangs were a problem, but they were a problem that could wait until the bigger problems were dealt with.
âAlright, assuming Iâm interested,â he said at last. âWhat would you want from me personally, and us in general?â
Relief would have made her knees weak if she wasnât already sitting. He was willing to play ball. She could work with that.
âAny information about Blue Crushâs operations,â she supplied, and was gratified when he started taking notes in quick, neat Chinese. âTimes, dates, places. Any of it. For this shipment specifically, we need to know when and where itâs coming in so we can get those poor people to safety.â
âNothing about my people?â He watched her warily and she didnât blame him. It probably did smell like a trap. âIf this is a set-upâŚâ
âItâs not,â Adamine told him. âWeâre looking to trade information about a mutual problem. I canât make promises about what my Captain and the DA might offer to sweeten the pot. I donât have that kind of authority.â
âFair enough,â he decided, and considered her. âWhy you? I donât know you, and youâre not Chinese.â
âI was the most likely not to die, if you decided to try and kill me,â she cracked a smile for the first time. âAnd Iâm good at keeping my face out of the media. My working name is Gaia.â
âThe gravity-bender whoâs been keeping the Earthshakers under control,â Renshu realized. As she suspected, he was considerably more familiar with her public name. âYouâre fire resistant too?â
âHeat can be affected by gravity. Chances are good that Iâm immune to you.â
It was probably a bad idea to tell him that, but a little trust wouldnât go amiss right now.
He flashed a quick, white smile in return. It made him look like a wolf, and he might have been intimidating if Adamine wasnât ready for him.
âWhatâs your real name, Gaia?â he asked, and offered a hand to shake. She took it and clasped his hand firmly in hers.
âAdamine,â she admitted freely, and shook his hand once. âMy email is on the top sheet. Let me know if we can work together.â
âI think I can manage that much,â he laughed, and settled back into his seat. âBetter run for home, Ladybug. This isnât a good place for people who donât like fire.â
âLook forward to hearing from you,â Adamine took the warning for what it was and left while the going was good.
Maybe, just maybe, he would work with her.
Maybe would have to be enough.
