Whenever I find myself having a positive interaction with law enforcement and going "Whoa, maybe police aren't actually all that bad" I have to remember to ask the following questions:
Would this officer have treated me the same if I weren't white?
Would this officer have treated me the same if I weren't fluent in English or if I had a foreign accent?
Would this officer have treated me the same if I were visibly trans or gender-nonconforming?
Would this officer have treated me the same if I were not well-groomed or wearing nice clothing?
Would this officer have treated me the same if I were visibly disabled?
Would this officer have treated me the same if I had a "threatening" face/voice/appearance/etc.?
Would this officer have treated me the same if I had a lisp/stutter/other speech impediment?
Would this officer have treated me the same if I were accompanied by anyone of the above demographics?
Would this officer have treated me the same if...?
Maybe in some situations the answer would actually be yes to all of these questions, but as a young white American woman who is fluent in English and has an extremely average and pretty nonthreatening appearance, I will never be able to know for sure. And it is not fair whatsoever to pretend that all police are nice or forgiving or virtuous or whatever because of the experience that I, an extremely privileged person, have with them.
So yeah. Check your privilege, I guess.
do not discuss your disability or medical conditions or pregnancy with the police. do not tell them your diagnosis. do not let them in your hospital room without a warrant. never talk to the cops. I donโt care if youโre white or cis or middle class or think you have nothing to hide. never ever ever talk to the cops without a lawyer. they will use every detail about your conditions against you and worse
