Old Man of the Forest (Strobilomyces floccopus) is such a shaggy, lovable and instantly recognizable bolete. And it’s edible, but I usually only find one at a time and it seems a pity to deprive a forest of them.

Strobilomyces floccopus (Boletaceae) is prominently wooly and scaly, a mixture of black and white and gray [1].
It is found solitary or in groups in deciduous as well as coniferous forests in low mountain ranges and alpine areas of Europe and North America [2].

Old Man of the Woods ( Strobilomyces floccopus )
Perfectly fitting name. Both common and scientific. The scientific name, Strobilomyces floccopus, roughly translated, means "wooly mushroom that looks like a pine cone". Very easy to identify,I don't think there's any other mushroom that looks quite like this bolete. One of my favorites!
