Some thoughts on streaming services, because Iāve been debating on what to keep and what to unsubscribe from for financial reasons. Letās talk about the great debate on Disney+ and whether to keep it. I know Iām not alone in the debate at the moment as every service, including Disney+, is raising their prices. Letās talk about what Iām really concerned with though with Disney+ specifically.
Will it even be worth it if they continue to remove content with no plans to release it on physical formats like dvd or blue ray? With them removing content that was exclusive to the platform while it was still running, youād think theyād release it in physical formats prior to removal for those who still want to watch it. They arenāt going to though. They have no plans to. And itās honestly disheartening to see whole projects that plenty of people put their heart and souls into, that earned them money they deserved, being completely erased.
If Disney wanted to they could make a whole separate section to their online store and make box sets and have them be Disney store exclusives. That would be the smart thing. But this choice of theirs to start removing content with no plans to give viewers and paying customers another way to access them, itās really making me wonder if the nostalgia of half of the content on there is going to be enough to keep subscribers.
The only thing really keeping me from unsubscribing is not knowing if my parents plan on getting their own account, because we watch my nephew and he love Disney shows and movies. Iāve really been debating on just saying āIāll get the movies he likes on dvd and see if I can find the shows tooā and unsubscribing.
With a lot of platforms starting to remove content like this and giving no other way to watch it once itās gone, I wouldnāt be surprised if there was a new wave in digital piracy. I mean, digital bootlegs have been around for years, itās never gone away, Iām aware of that. But with the way platforms are treating their shows alongside the increasing prices, I genuinely wouldnāt be surprised if you start going to look for other places to find these shows and movies and start seeing shady looking dvds floating around places like Amazon popping up.
Thereās no way to truly trust that what you pay for will be there the next time you open a streaming platform anymore. It was bad enough when movies and shows would platform hop from one streaming service to another. But this is getting ridiculous.
