Sunstone is the official State gemstone for Oregon, USA. It is a gem-quality plagioclase feldspar with unique glitter effect owed to tiny inclusions of hematite and sometimes goethite. The metallic schiller, known as aventurescence, is highly sought-after by gemstone collectors.  Typically, most sunstone exhibits a red effect, and more rarely, a blue or green glitter. Star sunstones are known but considered quite rare (pictured above). Although USA sunstone is the most well-known, deposits are also found in India, Canada, Madagascar, Norway and Russia.
