I headcanon Stanton as Welsh-English. More specifically, his mother was a Welsh noblewoman (the eldest and sole child/heir of a Welsh prince) and his father was a Marcher Lord (and maybe even an illegitimate child of John, King of England, who knows, sounds fun). His fatherβs castle was in the Welsh Marches.
Oh, and Stanton was/is his surnameβi.e. βof Stanton.β But he chose to leave his first name behind and go by his surname to preserve his family name as a small act of rebellion.
