Standing Down
I watch you burn in your own blaze the smoke curling around everything I thought I knew Your laughter, sharp and sweet cuts deeper than it heals
I've memorized the map of your storms the places where I shouldn't go the cliffs that drop without warning yet my feet keep wandering
Every word you throw every glance the pierces me feels like a promise I know I can't trust
Still, I linger a moth on a flame I've been warned against drawn to the chaos you carry like it's a perfume meant for me
And yet, tonight I tell myself, softly I am standing down not out of fear but because loving you is a battle I cannot survive without losing pieces of myself
So I step back just enough to breathe just enough to remember that even a heart in love deserves safe ground
