The World of Us: A Letter
‘Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt’.
These were the exact words of Abraham Licoln. Although this may be valid in certain circumstances, we would disagree with him on the subject of societal change. Public speaking and discourse remain an integral part of many institutions, with benefits ranging from improved speech and communication abilities to increased self-esteem and a broad understanding of a subject or issue.
Discourse traditionally comes from social institutions such as media and politics (amongst many others), and it shapes and orders our lives, interactions with others, and culture by bringing structure and order to language and thought.
With political occurrences reminding us of the value of persuasion and powerful oratory, which can provoke emotional and logical responses in us, we must be prepared to consider and understand and empathize with others who’s right to free expression we frequently oppose.
One example of discourse are debates. Debates are often seen in a professional setting, whether it is between students or your presidential candidates and it is almost always about something controversial. Debates are useful tools that grants us chances to be heard and to listen. However, we can also say that we often debate within ourselves, with our friends, and even with a stranger in the Facebook comments especially when media is being used all around the world. This exchange of information with oppositional stands often end up in arguments beyond the topics being discussed, unlike in formal debates, wherein they listen to each other, say their opposing stands, continually focusing on the topic at hand. This example shows how different people behave, depending on who they are talking to but this also shows how we don’t have perfect discipline to communicate properly with other people
The power that comes with our right to freedom of speech is great so why don’t we use it to make our world a better place? Many people have this kind of mindset which is a good thing but we all know that not everyone is familiar or not everyone cares if people want to change the world. Educating each other is essential, and not in a one-sided way. We are often told to speak up our opinions but we should also always consider the other side of the conversation. It always goes both ways and if we don’t know how to listen and how to communicate, we are no different from the Karens you see on the internet.
The world is constantly changing and it is inevitable. Through communication, we can walk through a path that is for the better and hopefully when the time comes, we can all agree on one thing.
