soooo… Alice Spencer has autism, maybe?
Has her favourite book memorised by heart
It’s her hyperfixation, and she escapes into that world during difficult times because she finds it comforting, even once the comfort *object* of the book is taken from her
Her monologue at the start of down the hole is literally her getting overstimulated by everyone else in the bunker and going “nope it’s hyperfixation reality escape time”
Similar to the previous point but she finds intimacy with Alfred difficult she struggles communicating feelings so she projects them onto the fantasy world of Alice and the White Rabbit, hoping he will understand without her having to outright say it
She has one person who she trusts and is very close to and physically cannot imagine her life without Alfred
Becomes frustrated when others do not see the world in the way she does
Very black-and-white thinking, the Nurse is a Villain because she separated Alfred from her, she creates this version of her in her head that is different from how she actually acts. The Nurse believes in tough love but she is trying to do what’s best for Alice, wanting her to accept Alfred’s demise
She struggles to empathise with Alfred’s situation even though he loves him, she tries to comfort him with the book because that is what would comfort her
I would need to rewatch the slime tutorial to see if she initiates physical contact with anyone apart from Alfred
You can argue all of this is because of the stress and trauma she is undergoing. But the other characters are all in the same situation. And none of them are doing this, most are actively discouraging it. A lot have other unhealthy coping mechanisms, like the Caterpillar. But Alice sees their situation in a completely different way to everyone else in the bunker. And I am choosing to read this as an autism allegory because projecting onto Alice Spencer is my new full-time job apparently
“It’s all about your pain” - Alice Spencer
“Sorry, but whose pain?” - Alfred Hallam

just thinking about alfred and alice both wearing “A” necklaces and the both of them saying they stand for their own names but both of them pretend they’re for each other.
Alfred: are you seeing someone?
Alice, flustered: no, why?
Alfred: I just really think it would help if you saw a therapist or something
