31) In awe, the first time you realized it

“I love you,” Ike blurts out, and Soren stares at him with wide, startled eyes. The book he is holding slips out of his hands. He isn’t quite quick enough to catch it on the way down, though Ike lunges for it too and he is just quick enough to slam his head into Ike’s.

What a way to react to a confession, Soren thinks, tenderly nursing his head as he stands upright.

Ike, before him, sheepish, holds his book out. “Sorry, I didn’t know that would... I thought... I didn’t think you’d be surprised, I guess. You know everything. I mean, I didn’t even know. That’s. Why I said it. I guess.”

And what is he even supposed to say to that? 

Soren sputters, taking the book with hands that do not shake. Know? Know what? That Ike is, apparently, for some reason, in love with him? Why? That, at least, makes it out.

“Why?”

Ike just blinks and smiles and Soren’s heart seizes the way it has since he was old enough to really know what love was. Ike, in all of his full-heartedness, his well-meaning devotion, his hardheadedness. Ike smiles and smiles and steps closer and says, “Well, I just realized. So.”
