This Oscar-winning film depicts the sad and unjust reality of family separation in a carceral society. When the circus, a metaphor for a militarized police state, comes to town, circus officials use physical force to capture many animals in the community, including a bear living with his wife and son. While trapped in the circus, the bear is locked in a cage and forced to perform under threat of physical violence. When he finally escapes and returns home, he finds his family is gone. Longing for their return, he spends his time alone creating a mechanical diorama that shares his story, and displays it to the community. Bear Story can is a heartbreaking tale about the injustices and trauma caused by the criminal justice system, based on the true story of the director’s grandfather who was imprisoned and exiled during a military coup. This is the first Chilean film to be nominated for an Oscar and to win an Oscar! Written by Daniel Castro, Directed by Gabriel Osorio Vargas, 2014.
