This Oscar-winning film depicts the sad and unjust reality of family separation in a carceral society. When the circus, a metaphor for a militarized police state, comes to town, circus officials use physical force to capture many animals in the community, including a bear living with his wife and son. While trapped in the circus, the bear is locked in a cage and forced to perform under threat of physical violence. When he finally escapes and returns home, he finds his family is gone.
