Watcher Valley 18: 'Thinking Ahead'

"I'm fine, Sammy. Stop worrying about me. Just go."

"I absolutely will not stop worrying about you, Seb. You're losing your mind. You gotta sleep."

"I don't know if I can," Sebastian whispered. Sam sat there staring at him, mouth tucked into a crooked pout as he was clearly thinking something over, and Sebastian stared at him right back. "What?"

"I'm just thinking about something my dad said," Sam replied quietly. "He's right about this part being hard. I gotta find a way to make you care about yourself somehow."

"Why would I care about myself right now?"

"You see, that's exactly-" Sam huffed a dry laugh. "Man. Dad knows what the fuck he's talking about."

"Just call him so you guys can get going, I'll be fine," Sebastian urged him. "I promise I won't go anywhere or do anything stupid."

"Hm…" Sam frowned deeply. "That doesn't cover all the possible means of self destruction, though, does it?"

Sebastian hung his head and sighed. "I promise I will do my best to sleep and not ruminate."

"Sorry, Sammy, we are not fucking off for a sandwich nap right now." Sebby pushed past him and kept walking toward town.

"Aw…" Sammy let out his best pathetic dog whine and followed a few paces behind with a dramatic slowness to his gate.

"Come on, boy, we can do that later," Sebby urged him.

"You know I don't want to go to Alex's house," Sammy whined.

"Maybe Dusty's asleep."

"He'll wake up," Sammy insisted. "He'll try to sniff my butt. And I'll have to sniff his butt. It's weird."

Sebby stopped at the edge of town and pointed at a spot on the ground under the awning of the general store. "Wait here, then."
