The bark of Acer x conspicuum 'Phoenix' (snakebark maple) offers winter interest and changes intensity of colour during the year. This upright tree was a seedling of Acer × conspicuum 'Silver Vein' that was itself an interspecific hybrid resulting from a cross between the Chinese Acer davidii and the North American Acer pensylvanicum.

The group of three Acer 'White Tigress' (maple, snake bark maple, Manchurian striped maple) trees in my garden are putting on a show of gentle amber autumn colour. This small tree is often multi-stemmed and at the base Cyclamen hederifolium var. hederifolium f. albiflorum (white-flowered ivy-leaved cyclamen) flowers are complimenting the white stripes in the bark.

Here the orange flowers of Fritillaria imperialis 'Aurora' (crown imperial) compliment the bark of Acer × conspicuum 'Phoenix' (snakebark maple). This large bulbous perennial is a bulb native to the mountainous regions of Turkey, western Iran and Kashmir. The ring of bell-shaped flowers are crowned by a cluster of leafy bracts, both the flowers and the bulbs have a distinctive ‘foxy’ scent.

The small deciduous tree Acer 'White Tigress' (snake bark maple) has produced a great show of yellow autumn colour. Then once the leaves fall they will reveal the white bark striations for a winter display.
