I so enjoyed reading this story. This is a global movement! @unwomenaust Meet Christine Wambulwa, smashing gender stereotypes in Kakuma, Kenya as the only female mechanic. Every day, by 7.30 a.m., she is at the vehicle repair shop along the highway. “I don’t have a weekend,” she says. “If someone has a vehicle break-down in the middle of the road, or in the bush, at any time, I will go. I like this job too much.” Christine grew up in Kakuma town watching her brothers. “When the boys made toy cars, I made toy cars, when they looked after cattle, I too looked after cattle. I thought I was a boy just like them!” When she grew older, there was not enough money to educate her and the family had many mouths to feed. She learned to repair vehicles. “The first vehicle I repaired was a Toyota lorry,” she says. “In the beginning, it was a little hard, I had to carry heavy things. But now we have better machines to lift heavy things.” Christine believes that women can do anything that men can do. But there are still some challenges in her line of work. "Men don’t believe that a woman can repair a vehicle. A man will think ten times before giving me a vehicle to repair,” she admits. That doesn’t stop Christine from doing the work she likes doing. She is the sole breadwinner of her family since her husband’s death. She is putting her own children through school and supporting her brothers and sisters too. “With the refugees, more opportunities have come too,” she says. “Things have opened up a little— there are more women drivers now. Earlier, very few girls went to school in this area. The culture was the main factor holding them back. But now many girls go to school—girls from Kakuma town and the refugee camp.” Christine’s message to other women: “Do not fear. Work is work. Whenever I have discovered creative talent in a #SouthAsian youth at some point the conversation of #ParentalSupport always without fail comes up. It was happening so frequently since the days of @JaySean and @Raghavworldwide that I even built a talent incubator and development platform @desicircus to cope with the major issue of lack of support for talented young #SouthAsian. ■ If we want to be able to #breakbarriers and #SmashStereotypes we first, needed to get family consent. Which always seemed bizarre to me. Still to this day I have regular conversations with parents of young Asian musical or creative talents, trying to convince the parent to believe in their child's talent. A few times sadly I have failed to win the debate and some incredible singers will never be heard or producers who will never be given consent to make music or actors never allowed to fulfill their ambition to attend auditions and be free or artists of any discipline able to express. All because the parents have those proverbial scissors in hand and are clipping wings. ■ for anyone going through this, I say, please come forward, I will fight your corner if I believe you are capable of progressing and are doing it for the right reasons. Alert from @terry_mardi - Many of you will not know that I was an #artschool graduate. I had to hide that for many years from my #desi community. It was frowned on and so being an #entrepreneur was much more acceptable for the #gossip patrol of my parents generation. I was always the black sheep of the so-called "family". I then learnt that many of my fellow #brownartists went through similar challenges. @desicircus became the means through which I would aim to #SmashStereotypes and today we aim to continue to do just that for #DesiYouth. #Art is #selfexpression. Having seen first hand, the effect that surpression of #emotion can have on people in the #southasian community, I thought it'd be a good idea to honour those brave enough to wear the title of #Artist proudly.
