so, Derek is low key kinda super smart. like, higher IQ than Lydia, but with a knack for different subjects (she of course has realized that hes smarter than he lets on, but doesnt know just how smart). He speaks and writes several languages fluently, knows his supernatural Ps and Qs, and is a history buff. he is also wildly competent when it comes to business (economics, finance, real estate, management, accounting, etc) and money, and is actually quite wealthy, but has no real drive to do anything with his money or intelligence when we see him in the show, and instead just lives off his insurance money/trust fund.

In light of that thing with Derek speaking Spanish I now want a fic where Derek’s really school smart, science, languages, history, what have you, having been in all AP classes and stuff, but this kind of smart isn’t very important to werewolves. They have different needs, like diplomacy and how to care for your forest and magic and stuff. Technology and stuff is important, too, but they rather leave that to the humans, who don’t have to deal with the supernatural. So, bottom line, Derek never got really encouraged by his family to pursue his smart and is now of the conviction that this kind of intelligence isn’t useful. Fast forward Derek got deaged - I kind of love how that trope is canon now - and wants to go to school as well since sitting at home isn’t very rewarding. Enter the pack getting surprised and blown away by Derek being really good at school. … Basically give me all the smart!Derek and then some.
