As I’m starting my second playthrough, I am noticing certain details that I didn’t before, and I’m smacking myself.
Like, that first conversation with Solas. When Rook mentions Varric being “hurt”, Solas responds with:
“Varric… is quite practiced at shading the truth, himself.”
But before that little addendum, you can see a flash of regret on his face and the way he says Varric’s name indicates that he feels so so sad before covering.
Ironically, he speaks of “shading the truth”when that’s exactly what he’s doing to you about what happened.
And no wonder Harding was crying when you first speak with her at the Lighthouse…
