I’ve been following Sego since their ‘Wicket Youth’ EP through Kitsuné last year, featuring the excellent ‘20 Years Tall’ (streaming below). The band now reside in LA, and is built around Spencer & Thomas from Mapleton, Utah, USA. They were fantastic when I saw them play in Texas at SXSW back in March, so I’m now very pleased to share some new music with you. ‘The Fringe’ is taken from the upcoming EP ‘Long Long Way From The Fringe’, due Septenber 11th on Dine Alone Records (US/Canadian home to Fidlar, Jeff The Brotherhood, Swervedriver and more). It’s another slice of effortlessly cool indie disco which will instantly appeal to anyone still mourning the loss of LCD Soundsystem (hi). As well as the trademark DFA production sound, the lyrical themes of self deprecation and hipster jibing certainly show similarities to Mr Murphy’s work. But Sego also show signs of connecting with a British guitar audience, fond of the angular riffs of Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party and The Rapture. It’s a classic sound but done with a fresh new energy and carefree swagger that gives the band a truly authentic appeal, over and above the easy musical comparisons that come to mind. I really hope they can come tour the UK soon!
