As someone who’s also had very bad breeder experience, I’d say look around for options other than a breeder. Because I swear I’ve gotten far healthier (both physically & mentally) and far friendlier rats from a local feeder bin or accidental Craigslist litter than I ever have from a breeder. I know it’s ideal to support an ethical breeder rather than potentially supporting a pet store or whatever, but your Disco’s happiness and well-being come before personal preference
thank you for your replies! yes, i’m currently looking into other options, just bc i know 4 months is a long time for disco to live alone. there aren’t any older rats in craigslist atm, and i only found one rescue with any rats available, and it’s a 2 hr drive. i’d be willing to do it, but not as a first option.
i feel weird about feeder bins, but i’d be open to it, esp bc there’d be a lot to choose from. i do have a student who breeds feeders and is actually p damn knowledgeable about rodents. i’m not willing to do pet stores in any capacity, tho. i’m just iffy on everything bc i’ve fucked up with rats so many times now. i’ve only gotten them from two sources, both of which i now know were lousy sources, but my worst nightmare would be trying to get disco cagemates again, only to have it backfire and have three separate cages going. i’ve just made a lot of mistakes with rats, and so ofc i’m now terrified of making more.
i know the breeder in merced is good. i’ve seen her rats and they are WORLDS AWAY from what i’ve had. i know they’re my best shot at getting disco some good cagemates. but 4 months is so long to wait for a rat. idk. maybe i will check out this rescue and some nearby feeders, but i wouldn’t bring anything home unless i found something perfect...
