Prompt:Â âYouâre adorable, and I canât believe I have you all to myself.â
Pairing: Gladio/OC (Joey Mcgill)
Warnings:Â None
A/N: This has been sitting in my inbox for 5 months and that is unacceptable. Iâm so sorry Rachel!Â
Tagging:Â @ffxv-ocs-unite
Ignis had been kind enough to take Noctis and Prompto out and about Lestallum that evening. It was really a win-win for everyone, although that wasnât really what either Gladio or Joey were thinking about at that moment. For the evening the two of them had time to be truly alone together, which was certainly something to be savored.
Joey looked up from her soda, having gotten lost in looking at the scenery out the window for a moment. She hadnât really noticed the contented smile that had painted itself on her face, and how for the first time in a while she was genuinely relaxed and without worry.Â
Gladio on the other hand had taken notice, and to him it was definitely a sight to see. When she was happy and content, it was infectious, and he couldnât help cracking a smile in response.Â
Joey however hadnât quite connected her behavior to his, and found his smile curious.
âWhatâs on your mind?âÂ
By now Gladio was well aware that body language could be something of an issue, and that she wasnât always necessarily aware of her own. He shifted slightly in his chair, expression shifting to a more playful one.Â
âJust thinkinâ you look adorable right now,â he answered, âAnd how I canât believe I have you all to myself.â
Joey found a laugh escaping her as the lightest blush crept up on her face. Even as things were, his compliments still had that effect on her. Perhaps it was simply out of habit and reflex she reacted that way.Â
âI was thinking nearly the same,â she confessed. â... I love you. I hope I donât wear it out by saying it too much.â

So before I change my mind and edit this into oblivion, hereâs what I came up with in about 4 hours.
âI just donât feel like Iâm enough for you.â
â
She checked and rechecked her hair in the mirror, intensely unsatisfied with every strand. The braided headband slipped through over and over as she struggled to find the perfect placement. A few glances over her wardrobe left her with more questions than confidence.
An alarm sounded on the intercom in her apartment. She had to just commit to something and head out or sheâd be late. And sheâd probably upset her companion for the night. Though he never complained before, but she could still feel it, his frustration.
She jogged over to the intercom and blushed at the blonde mess fish-eyed by the camera. She pressed the button to respond. âIâll be down in just a second, Ryuji.â
He looked into the camera and grinned. âDonât rush on my account, senpai. Weâre still early.â
She pulled on her thick blue jacket, grabbed a lip gloss from her desk and quickly applied it as she slipped into her shoes at the genkan. Once the lock engaged, she rushed to the elevator and waited, impatiently, for it to reach the bottom floor.
Her heart jumped when she saw him standing in the lobby, a fear when she noticed his thick purple 777 hoodie. He stood at the windows to her buildingâs lobby, eyes focused on the snow that threatened to stick in the cold evening air. Something about him felt calmer, and she took note that his leg didnât bounce.
âRyuji?â She ventured closer to him.
He jumped immediately and spun around, arms flailed in her general direction before settling on a defensive pose. It took a brief moment for him to calm enough to relax again. âYo, senpai. That was fast.â
She smiled to him. âI didnât want to keep you waiting.â She fussed with a bit of hair by her ear. âSo where are we headed tonight?â
A blush whispered on his cheeks as he lifted a hand to muss his own hair. âWell, this was⌠sorta spur of the moment, ya know? I didnât haveâŚâ His eyes widened and he clapped his fist into his palm. âMy mom ordered some KFC for Christmas. She looked pretty upset when I told her I made plans.â He tilted his head. âWould you mind eatinâ dinner with my and Mom?â
Makotoâs brow lifted as he spoke. To be invited out for a Christmas date shocked her enough, but to be invited to eat Christmas dinner with his family? He hadnât even told them about his birthday so he could spend it alone with his mother.
She attempted to swallow, her mouth and throat dry. Nerves had started to get to her hours ago, intensified as the evening drew closer. âI⌠If youâre sure, Ryuji.â He grinned. âI mean, shouldnât you ask your mother?â
He shrugged and held his hand out to her. âCâmon. My mom thinks youâre great. She ainât the kind to turn someone down on a holiday, either.â
She looked to his ungloved hand. True, the temperature hadnât dropped enough to warrant gloves, but she still worried. âO-okay.â
His meaty paws grabbed her lithe fingers and he ushered them out the door. âHave you ever had KFC for Christmas, senpai?â
Her brow furrowed slightly. âOh, uh⌠no. My Dad and I used to cook dinner together, when he wasnât working. After he⌠passed, my sister works overtime, so I usually cook up something special that my sister can heat up as leftovers.â She brightened. âShe did say I could bring her some at work this year if I wanted to. Maybe Iâll make some for her tomorrow, to make up.â
Ryuji grinned back to her as they headed for the station. âI didnât know you sister even ate. All I hear about her is that sheâs workinâ.â
A giggle escaped her before she even noticed. âShe eats from time to time. She actually loves when I make soup. Sheâll usually stay home for that.â
He nodded absently. âWell, she deserves it with all the work she did for us.â
âYeah.â She squeezed his hand. âI know you prefer ramen, but Iâll make some for you too.â She pulled herself closer to him. âMaybe for New Yearâs you could come over and we could⌠celebrate together.â
His brow furrowed. âNew Yearâs?â He looked up as he walked, his longer legs still difficult for her to keep up with. âMom has to work for New Yearâs, so I guess Iâll be free.â His head fell. âNow that the Phantom Thieves arenât needed, I guess weâre all free, huh?â
Makotoâs shoulders drooped. âUh⌠Sure.â
They fell into a silence, though Makoto couldnât tell if she should call it awkward or comfortable. He seemed lost in thought, though she couldnât quite place his expression. She had memorized his face, especially his lips (though she told herself she had to because she spent so much time around him in the Metaverse and it had nothing to do with any frivolous feelings like imagining what they might feel like), and thus his expressions. This one stumped her.
She got a clue as they rode the train. Christmas meant the trains had plenty of room, most people at home with their family or at an event or shopping center in a different part of town. Winter Comiket would start soon, so many people would be near Odaiba. But not everyone, like the heavily made-up girl a few seats down from them. Ryuji kept his focus on her for most of the train ride. Makoto suddenly wished she had followed Annâs advice and watched any number of those makeup tutorials the model sent her.
He recaptured her hand for the walk from the station back to his apartment, but the damage had already been done. Makoto allowed the contact, a small comfort as she thought of the girl on the train. She barely registered the distance they covered until he released her to knock on the door and fish his keys out of his pocket.
âIâm home!â He opened the door and strode through, slipping easily out of his shoes at the genkan.
Makoto followed a bit more slowly. She didnât belong here, on a holiday. She felt like an outsider, a usurper, an interloper between Ryuji and his mother.
âRyuji-chan? I thought you had plans, sweetie.â His mother appeared from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a towel.
He nodded. âI did. I brought Makoto to have Christmas dinner with us.â He jabbed a thumb in Makotoâs direction.
Makoto did her best to hop out of her boots to bow to his mother. âPardon the intrusion, Sakamoto-san.â
Ryujiâs mother smiled a bit lop-sided. âItâs no intrusion, Makoto-san. But what about your family?â
Ryuji tensed immediately. âMa!â
His mother started and looked between them. âWhat?â
Makoto retrieved her purse and moved into the apartment. âItâs okay, Ryuji.â His weak attempt to defend her did liven her spirits a bit. âMy sister is working overtime for Christmas. I was home alone, Sakamoto-san.â
She nodded slowly, though Makoto could tell she had more questions. âWell, I just finished eating my fill, but thereâs still plenty in here. Do you want me to go out? Give you two some⌠privacy?â She gave her son a pointed look.
He shrugged and dropped on the couch. âNah. Itâs just Makoto, Ma. You can stay here. I wouldnât want you wanderinâ around in the cold, anyway.â
A pang shot through Makotoâs heart at his words. Christmas dates typically meant romance and splendor. Instead, she warranted a âjustâ.
Ryujiâs mother looked to her and her back stiffened. She took a slow breath and looked back to her son. âI had some things to pick up at the store anyway.â
Ryuji sat up. âI can go get whatever you need, Ma.â
His mother shook her head. âNo, itâs fine. You get in here and set up some plates for you and your⌠friend. Iâll be back a little while.â She smiled to Makoto. âHave a seat, dear. My son will serve you properly.â
Makoto waved a hand. âItâs okay, Sakamoto-san.â
The older woman set her jaw. âSit. Please. Ryuji-chan, in the kitchen. Now.â
Ryujiâs brow furrowed as he glanced between his senpai and his mother. âYeah, okay.â
Makoto settled herself down into a pillow across from the couch. She had made too much out of his text. He simply wanted to prevent her from being alone on Christmas. As if someone like Ryuji would ever have interest in someone like her. After all the time she spent with Akira, she still had little to no social skills. Her excellent grades, professional demeanor, and detective attitude had almost ruined her only friendship outside of the Phantom Thieves. Eiko had forgiven her, considering her interference had proven correct, and maintained their relationship. They had even studied together a few times and capped the night off with a bit of karaoke.
But she knew her place. She had forged herself into a useful tool, but a tool, nonetheless. âJustâ a tool.
âJust a fool.â She muttered the words to the table in front of her.
âWhat was that, Makoto-chan?â Ryujiâs mother appeared from the kitchen.
Makoto watched the woman as she flitted around the living room to find her jacket and purse. âOh, n-nothing.â
The older woman smiled to her as she moved closer. âMakoto-chan, donât worry too much about my boor of a son. Heâs⌠He and I still have a lot of recovering to do.â She nodded and headed for the genkan. âEat as much as you want. I always forget about the leftovers and they go bad in the fridge.â
Makoto stood from the table and bowed as his mother slipped on her shoes and disappeared into the gentle snowfall. âThanksâŚâ She whispered to the door as his mother locked it from the outside.
âYou know, I donât actually know the difference between meats, so I just brought the bucket.â Ryuji reappeared from the kitchen, bucket in hand. âMom just made herself a side since I went out, but I can go back in and find you somethinâ if you like.â
Makoto wanted to smile, but she knew better. She wanted to fake it, but the pain from her heart radiated through her chest. âNo, I⌠Iâm okay.â
He shrugged and gently placed the bucket on the table and offered her a paper plate. She took it as she sunk back down onto the pillow across from him. The edges of her lips twitched as he eagerly set himself to the bucket to yank out pieces of chicken for himself. Such enthusiasm in all things, though none for her.
âCâmon senpai, lemme know if Iâm takinâ something you like, okay?â He smiled to her, but something about it seemed off.
Despite her best attempts, she couldnât return it. âItâs okay, Ryuji. I⌠Iâve lost my appetite.â
His brow lifted. âReally? Are you worried about calories or whatever? Câmon, itâs Christmas, senpai. Live a little.â
She allowed a small smile as her eyes fell. âMaybe tomorrow.â
Ryuji tilted his head and picked up a napkin. âOkay, look.â He wiped his hands off a bit more forcefully than they deserved. âI know I did somethinâ wrong, but I ainât no mind-reader, so just⌠tell me, okay?â
Makoto furrowed her brow. He hadnât noticed her mood shifts before. âHow did you-â Not important. She pressed her lips together. âNothingâs wrong, Ryuji. Donât worry about me. Enjoy your dinner.â
He slapped the napkin onto the table. Makoto stiffened, eyes wide. âItâs my choice to worry âbout ya, okay. And Iâm worryinâ. So whatâs wrong?â When his eyes met hers, he winced and sagged a bit.
Makoto pressed her lips together. âWhy do you think something is wrong, Ryuji?â
He gestured to the door. âMom said you seemed down and-â
She shook her head. Of course he hadnât actually noticed. She scoffed. âYou know what? I think Iâll head back home and get started on that soup for my sister.â
Ryuji shifted onto his knees. âBut you just got here!â
She shook her head and pushed herself up from the floor. âAnd Iâll just be leaving.â
Ryuji shot up just as quickly, though he faltered a bit on his bad leg. âMakoto!â
She shook her head again. âNo. I donât need your pity chicken, okay?â She headed for her boots.
His brow furrowed as he sidled around the table. âPity chicken? What the hell are you talkinâ about?â
She dropped her purse on the floor and slipped her feet into the unzipped boots. âYou only invited me out because you knew Iâd be alone, right? Well, Iâm fine on my own, Sakamoto-kun.â
He grabbed her wrist before she could bend down to zip up her boots. âIs that what you think, Makoto?â
Her eyes narrowed at his hand. âLet me go, Ryuji.â
Instead, he moved around to stand in front of her. âMakoto, you think I asked you out⌠out of pity?â His small eyebrows curved into a mixture she couldnât recognize.
But her fury had been ignited. âDidnât you?â
He shook his head. âNo. I⌠Why would you think that?â
She sneered at him. âThe girl on the train.â
His head pulled back. âWhat girl?â
Snow fell on her fury. âThe⌠she had a lot of⌠makeup on and-â
He nodded slowly. âOh, her. What about her?â
She set her jaw and the fire burned brighter. âYou spent the whole train ride looking at her!â
He laughed at this. She almost growled. âIs that it? It was just a pretty girl, she didnât mean nothin-â
ââJustâ?â She growled for real. ââJustâ a pretty girl. She didnât âmean nothingâ. So that means I donât âmean nothingâ either.â
His brow furrowed. âWhat?â
One incredulous laugh left her. âWhat did you say? âItâs just Makoto, Maâ.â
He narrowed his eyes. âYeah?â
She shook her head. For all that she loved about him, she hated when his intelligence waned. âSo I donât âmean nothingâ either.â
He slid his hands up her arms. âCâmon, senpai, you canât really think that.â
Sparks left a trail behind his hands, mingled in her chest. âWhy wouldnât I, Ryuji?â Her nose stung while tears threatened her eyes. âA week ago I nearly lost you. Yesterday I nearly lost you again. I thought that maybe tonight, on Christmas, we would have a chance to go out and⌠I couldâŚâ She squeezed her eyes shut. âBut who am I kidding. Why would someone like you ever want to be with someone like me?â
His hands fell away from her as the tears slipped down her cheeks. âMakotoâŚâ
She felt like such an idiot. âYouâre such a bright star, Ryuji. You may not be the best in academics, but you try so hard, go into your studies with such fervor. I heard from the others that you were the driving force behind taking down Kamoshida. You trained for months to get your leg strength back. You put yourself into more danger than the rest of us in the Metaverse. You almost got killed trying to save me from Kaneshiroâs thugs.â
An involuntary sniff brought one hand to her cheek. âYouâre so amazing, Ryuji. I admire you. And I knew a long time ago that I like you. I like you as more than just a kouhai or a Phantom Thief. Or even a friend. And when I thought⌠that you invited me out on Christmas as a date, I thought maybe you liked me, too.
âBut how could you? How could I ever measure up to you, Ryuji? All I am is a good student. Iâm not even that good at Aikido. But you? Youâre a track star. Even after your injury.â
Her hand dropped back down to her side. âI just donât feel like Iâm enough for you. And now I know Iâm not.â
She swallowed hard around the lump in her throat. âSorry for my outburst, Sakamoto-kun. I should⌠head home.â
âAre you fucking serious?â The blonde whispered over her as she bent down to her boots again. âAre you shitting me?â
Makoto lifted her eyes to him. âLanguage, Sakamoto-kun.â
Brown eyes met red as he gripped her face tightly. âMakoto. Did you just say⌠you like me? Was that a confession?â
Her cheeks squished together, she felt the mirth in her throat. âI⌠sâpose?â
A yelp from the blonde startled her as he threw his arms up in triumph. âWoo! Holy shit!â He managed a small jig in the genkan.
Makoto allowed a few apprehensive laughs, though her brow had furrowed deeply. âRy-Ryuji?â
At his name, he advanced to envelope her in a warm hug. âMerry effinâ Christmas, senpai. Holy shit.â He leaned back, grip tightened, to lift her out of her boots. âMakoto Niijima, best girl, likes me!â
She squeaked. âRyuji! My boots!â
His head dropped slightly and he laughed again. âOh, sorry, senpai.â He lowered her carefully, gently.
She felt his strength, a new stock of butterflies flitted in her gut, as he lowered her down, the strain on his muscles evident despite the hoodie. She carefully placed her feet back on the inner floor and nodded to him. He grinned and nudged her back into the apartment. She only allowed him room enough to step out of the genkan.
But not further. She knew her place. âRyuji, I would like to put on my boots.â
His brow furrowed. âWhy?â
âSeriously?â She tilted her head slightly. âI want to go home.â
He looked genuinely hurt. âWhat? Why?â
She sighed and took a step forward. âAfter all of that, you still donât get it.â
He rolled his eyes and lifted a hand to her face. Heat immediately spread over her cheeks and onto her ears. He moved his thumb to wipe away the drying tear stain over her cheek. âMakoto Niijima, Student Council President, think youâre so smart, and you donât get it either.â
Before she could form the proper sneer, his face turned blurry, too close to make out. A spark jumped under her lips from his, pressed to hers. She barely registered the kiss, the sensation of lips on lips, startled and confused. Only after his other hand moved to cup her face did she calm and lift her hands to his waist.
As soon as her hands pressed into the purple hoodie, he started and pulled away. âOh, geez.â He took a step back and rubbed the back of his neck. âS-Sorry, senpai, I uh⌠I donât know what got into me.â
A redness extended from his cheeks to his ears and down his neck. Her hands hovered where she had touched him, almost held him as he kissed her.
He kissed her.
On Christmas.
Her brow lifted. âDoes⌠Does this mean⌠You like me, too?â
He shrugged, one hand still on the back of his neck. âIâve liked you for a while, senpai. I just know I ainât the best choice for someone as amazinâ as you, so I never said anything.â
She laughed once. âYou thought you were inadequate?â
His brow furrowed. âFor the Student Council President? Hell yeah Iâm inadequate.â
A warm smile found itâs way to her lips. âWhat changed your mind?â
He shook his head. âI still ainât good enough for you, but Ma always told me that I need to accept the love I get instead of the love I think I deserve.â His eyes looked toward the ceiling. âI think? Or it was a quote from somethinâ. âYou only accept the love you think you deserveâ or something, and I gotta-â
Makoto giggled. Her mirth interrupted Ryujiâs musings. He grinned brightly to her. âWhatever. If you think Iâm worthy, then who am I to say no, right?â
His grin spread to her face. She nodded to him. âMerry effinâ Christmas, Ryuji.â
He nodded. âBest Christmas present I ever got.â His expression shifted to surprise. âOh! We still gotta eat.â He leaned forward. âUnless youâre still not hungry.â
She shook her head. âLetâs eat together, Ryuji.â
2 and 5 for the question meme - the Demon/Ifrit's Den au
*tackles you* HIIIIII!! :D
Ifritâs Den AU...me likey that name!
2. What scene did you first put down?
First fic was Demon Gladdy Daddy. I had legit not planned anything more. Was just some fun. But then my muse wanted something with Nyx. And then she started talking about Ignis. Made me think about, okay how am I going to do this as I didnât want it to be similar to Gladio and Nyx. And I see Ignis as a bit more refined than the other two (sorry my babes). So, hence I scribbled something down about a special bar where demons would come to relax, meet others, and conduct some business. So, you can say that Green-Eyed Demon is the first scene for the au to make it what it is turning into now!
5. What part was hardest to write?
Ignis one, indeed. Because I want him to be so different from Gladio and Nyx. I wanted to try a different style, less wild or detail. Something more refined. Pushing myself. It really made struggle and complained about it, but in the end it all turned out! It really taught me a few more things, and really made the foundation for the rest of the au.Â
Thanks for asking me *beams* hope it answered your questions!

That ignis edit that you made and captioned with 'lights will guide you home', where did you get that quote from cause I heard "When The Darkness Comes" start playing in my head and I was curious if that was where you got the quote from.
Actually, I got the inspiration for the quote from Coldplayâs song, Fix You. c: The lyrics, in my opinion, remind me a little of Ignis and Noctis (if youâre into Ignoct stuff~). Especially the first verse before it goes into the chorus.
If youâre interested in it, I recommend listening to both the original and the Boyce Avenue cover of the song. vuv The Boyce Avenue gives off a bit more of those Ignoct vibes and helps make the gifset, I feel~
Send me the falling star emoji and Iâll write a drabble about a character using the first song that plays on shuffle.Â
A/N: To make this prompt a little easier to fill, I chose to incorporate the song a little differently, and I made this one a reader-insert.Â
âBaby Did a Bad Bad Thingâ Cover by (Amy Lee) (Gladio/Reader-SFW)Â
Warning: Mention of Harassment/Attempted Assault
Your mascara had become smeared from wiping at your eyes, padding with a tissue you had fished out of your purse. All you had been able to do at first was just sob, tears bubbling up and your voice nothing more than a distraught whine. Music was still blaring some distance away, but it helped now that it was just the two of you.
Gladio had his hand on your back, rubbing gently to try and offer a gesture of comfort. His expression was a mixture of concern, with the beginning of anger starting to make its way out. It was by no means directed at you though. Just at whatever, or whomever brought you to tears like this.Â
âItâs alright. Iâm here.â He tried to say something he hope would reinforce his actions. âWhat happened, Y/N?â
It took a moment before the words forced their way out. It was so painful to say it, it felt as though you might choke on the words before you got them all out.Â
âI⌠I ran into my ex-boyfriend. I guess he was with someone at the party. But, he saw me and he came up to me and⌠he started talking about wanting me back and wouldnât leave me alone when I told him no andâŚâ
The last part of the sentence became trapped in your throat, but the words found their way out.Â
âHe grabbed me, tried to get me to go with him.â
Gladio could look down and see a bruise coloring your wrist. It all made sense. No wonder you were so panic-stricken when he found you.Â
âYou got away from him. Thatâs why you were running, isnât it?â
You nodded slowly. âYeah, thatâs right.â
Gladio furrowed his brow. âI guess he hasnât changed one bit,â he muttered. âHey, do you want me to walk you back to your place? If he tries to tail you Iâll make sure to stand between you and him.â
You breathed an unsteady sigh. It was true your ex didnât have your number and current address, but a part of you didnât really want to go him. Especially if he was trying to catch up with you.Â
Gladio thought for a moment. âIf you donât feel safe to go home just yet⌠I was on my way to pick up some dinner for my sister and I. Youâre welcome to join us, if you want.â
You tapped your foot on the ground anxiously, weighing the options in your head.Â
âWell, I havenât eaten yet. But, I really donât want to impose on you, Gladio.â
He shook his head. âItâs not imposing if Iâm offering.â He tried to manage a small smile, reassuring you that it was really fine with him. âIf you want to come, you can.â
You stood up slowly, trying to bat off the stains your makeup had left.Â
âIn that case⌠yeah, I think Iâll take you up on that offer.â
