I think a lot of fandom's problems would be solved if more people who need some kind of religious structure in their lives actually found an appropriate faith tradition and stopped trying to derive a moral code and a reason for living from movies and TV shows. You can't have a fun conversation about art with someone who is treating that art like their sacred text, particularly when they become enraged that the blasphemous show runners and writers are destroying the True Religion by putting in a subplot they don't like
Yeah, yeah, Cassandra Clare got her start writing fanfic, old news.
Rebecca Thorne wrote She-Ra fanfic before writing Tomes & Tea.
Matt Dinniman wrote GI Joe and Transformers crossover fanfic before writing Dungeon Crawler Carl.
Pierce Brown wrote Greek Mythology fanfic before writing Red Rising.
Andy Weir wrote Ready Player One fanfic that later got canonized by Ernest Cline before writing The Martian.
Fanfic has never been, and will never be inferior to published works, and writing one does not discredit or devalue the quality of your work when writing another.

The Prince and The Beast
Soooo, I wanted to examine the Beast and the Prince's design. It's well known that the Prince's design is viewed as pretty underwhelming, especially when compared to Beast's much more striking design.
Even the creative minds behind the movie knew, before it released in theaters, that no matter what they designed, people were going to prefer the Beast over the Prince. The audience spent the entire movie endearing themselves to the Beast, and the Prince feels like a stranger comparatively.(They say as much during the commentary for the movie.)
And, honestly, the disappointment is very understandable.
But, I wanted to take a closer look and discuss why they were designed the way they were, bc I've never seen anyone bring up these particular points before, and I thought it'd be fun to share my thoughts
So.
First off, why does his design look so different from the Beast?
The only thing that stays the same after the transformation are his eyes. Even his hair and fur color are different. Why is that?
Well, the reason for that is bc the Beast is a hybrid chimera of different animals.
Glen Keane describes the Beast's design here:
I said, “I like the massiveness of this buffalo head”, and I sketched out the weight, “and of this buffalo head”, I said, “But the brow of the gorilla,” and I drew the brow there. “But then the muzzle of this wild boar,” and then the mane of a lion but the body of a bear, and then the legs of this wolf.
As I did it, it just all came together. And like I was telling you before, there’s this moment where you recognize the character. And I looked at it, and I said, “That’s him. That’s what he looks like, like that, Bruce. That’s what – that’s the Beast.”
One of the most prominent animals in Beast's design is that of a bison. So his coloration correlates moreso to the animal, not the person. We also have a rainbow of other shades of brown mixed in, likely coming from the wild boar, bear, and whatever else.
The Beast's design was never meant to match what the Prince's design actually looked like. It's just building off the animals the Beast is made from. It was meant to be a cool monster design that contrasts what the Prince actually looks like.
The eyes are the only thing that stay the same, as a visual cue to tell the audience/Belle that he and the Beast are the same person.
Secondly, his human design makes so much more sense when you realize that he was likely heavily based off of Michaelangelo's David.
The Prince is supposed to be unbelievably beautiful and handsome. It ties back to the themes of the story - despite his beauty, and having everything he ever wanted, he had no kindness or love in his heart, which is why he ended up cursed.
Knowing that, it makes sense that they would choose to base his design off of something as magnificent as one of the greatest sculptures ever created.
However, given it's a beautiful sculpture, specifically a highly detailed and realistic one depicting the complexities of the human form, it makes trying to capture that beauty in motion... extremely difficult.
And, even if he wasn't based on David specifically, he was definitely inspired by this era and style of art, which shares all of the previously mentioned problems.
Which is why, in practice, the Prince looks... off.
The transformation sequence was one of the very last pieces of animation done on the movie, and that includes animating the final design of the Prince.
Beauty and the Beast was made in basically 2 years time. Most films around this period took 4 years to produce, but halfway through production, they were told to rewrite the entire story from scratch and start all over. So it was already starting off at a disadvantage.
Glen Keane only had so much time to work on this part, and not nearly enough time to familiarize himself with the Prince's design enough to make animating him feel natural. And that goes for any of the other artists working with him, including cleanup and assistants.
Knowing that, the Prince's occasional awkward animation near the end becomes much more understandable.
The unfortunate part is that, because the Prince has such a classical, high art inspired design, and so few scenes that properly showcase it well enough for the audience to understand the reference and endear themselves to it, it's become difficult for people to recreate it in any meaningful way.
In fact, most of the official books have art of the Prince that vary from decent...
.... To just plain awful.
In fact, the bad far, far outways the good here. Half of them don't even look like the Prince.
It's rare enough to get official art of the Prince in the first place, bc most of the merchandising is focused on the Beast since that design is more iconic. But it's even rarer to get good art of him.
The poor guy has it rough.
(I do wonder if this could've helped fuel dissatisfaction for the Prince's design. bc the movie came out at a time where getting good visuals of films was a much more difficult task, and so the only way to really get a good, long look at him were through the associated picture books...
... Which, clearly, did him absolutely no favors.)
But all that aside, it's not impossible to make use of the Prince's design as originally intended. The potential is there.
One of the best examples is from the Mirrorverse manga.
He's drawn consistently handsome, while keeping his original design in mind.
Which proves that the design absolutely can work, if given a little tweaks and wiggle room.
The manga even gives us this cool half-Beast design, giving the Prince horns, tusks, claws, and animal ears (at least for one panel on that last one).
It's honestly such a cool design concept, that I wish we saw more of it outside of this manga.
Anyway uhhhhhhhhh idk how to end this, I just kinda wanted to ramble about this topic lol
Uhhhh bye

I know this is the website where we talk about artists and writers doing anything other than making art or writing, but man, we REALLY undersell how good it feels to actually work on your stuff.
Like you hit your word count for the first time in a week and its like
op disabled reblogs so here
It's so hard to come to that conclusion though, like at this point unalive is a part of gen Z culture. It's just using a word, they're not even thinking about talking on TikTok or YouTube anymore, they're just talking. It's a lot like people getting mad over AAVE because it's not grammatically correct and yes it's not, but AAVE is a cultural usage of English, a dialect if you will. They use it because their friends and family use it, everyone talks that way. Nobody thinks about grammar when speaking AAVE. It's actually kind of offensive if you try to correct someone. It's like that with unalive too. It's a clashing of culture, we don't understand it because we see it as it was formed, a response to a shitty half ass language filter, not as it is used, which is just another word for kill, death, or died. I really think this one is just not a big deal enough to fight. I think that teacher in the first part, while I agree with the sentiment and find the story funny, it's also in my opinion not about maturity but just a culture thing.
From working with children, the way kids who use unalive react when they hear someone say kill or suicide, it's not just slang or comparable to minoritised dialects, it's self-censorship, active and deliberate with fear of consequences built into it.
The idea of being punished by an invisible force for saying a bad word is literally something I was terrified of in Catholic school and it’s creepy that corporate sponsors are living in kids’ heads the way God and Satan lived in ours.
kill the cop they have poisoned your heart with and hold the weight of these words in your hands. they are tools meant to be used to better the world, and like most tools they can also be used to make the world a worse place through misuse. that is not an excuse to not use them, that is an indictment of the responsibility that Being Able To Use Words carries.
censorship is vile in all its forms and i will kill it until it dies a painful death.
so we're doing propaganda eh

that's... not how it works. you can't guarantee that your work definitely won't squick anyone. what do you think you're saying?
"squick free" someone writes on their wholesome family fic about married characters expecting a baby.
I read it and am extremely squicked.
You do not know what squicks other people. "Squick" is not a category of elements, it is a description of a reaction.
Squick is literally a personal thing, you literally cannot know what squicks another person.
Same goes for triggers, by the way. You can't guarantee something is trigger-free because literally anything can be a trigger because the human brain can be weird like that sometimes.
No no, actually there's a perfect way to write an absolutely squick free fanfic! Plenty of writers do it successfully every day!
Here.
Blank documents squick me out because they remind me of all my unstarted writing projects. :/
guys. c'mon.
oh my goddd
Okay, for anyone ACTUALLY unsure and wanting to learn: "squick" is an old fandom term. It means something that grosses you out or makes you deeply uncomfortable, but doesn't give you as intense negative reactions as a trigger. They are incredibly personal, though often times, just like with triggers, you can tag relatively common squicks.
For me, mpreg is a squick. It makes me deeply uncomfortable, but it doesn't send me into a panic spiral, a deep depression, or make me angry like reading about eye trauma does.
My cousins in Lannister, ‘squick’ didn’t even originate in fandom.
Also useful to note that ‘squick’ is specifically used to mean “this isn’t for me, personally” without adding a moral judgement to it. A simple easy way to say ‘no, thank you but you do you’. Unlike ‘cringe’ which has negative connotations. Squicks are also more than just uncomfortable.
Daddy kink makes me uncomfortable
Degradation squicks me out
Hand trauma is a trigger
First known usage of "squick" was in 1991. It's not some new term that was made up for this post.
It's a portmanteau of Squeamish and Ick.
Modern parlance would translate it as "A thing that gives me the ick"
Hope this helps, kids ignorant of and derisive towards fandom history.

What kinda of friend are you?
Get all luggage and food.
Get all luggage, no food.
Get only personal luggage, but also get food.
Get only personal luggage, no food.
A secret fifth thing.
Nuance/I'm bald/What?
Thinking about a thing I did for a friend last year and how awful the whole event was and how he certainly didn't help, what would you do in these events:
Traveling across states to move, a friend of ours (in his car) got separated from us (in the U-Haul with his apartment) and made it to the hotel (that I booked) several hours before us. When asked if he wanted food, he said yes. Rather than go get it for us, he stayed at the hotel. We had to go learn that the U-Haul was too big for the drive-thru, but we got food. When we got to the hotel, cold and raining, we discovered he hadn't gotten our luggage out of his car and brought it to the room.
So I ask you, what kind of friend are you?
Got some Grade A Senshi propaganda right he- OH GOD OH NO

Getting down on my knees and thanking the humans who invented dishwashers and washing machines.
we gotta get back to torrent distribution, i just watched someone eat eight grand in bandwidth charges because they ran a direct-download piracy site with local file hosting through cloudflare. torrents were invented literally for this exact reason
torrents work like this
i have a file or folder on my pc that i want to share with other people. let's call it gayshit.mp3
unfortunately gayshit.mp3 is 750mb and im not paying for discord nitro so i need another way to send it
i put it into qbittorrent and it makes a torrent file. this is essentially a very small file that points to gayshit.mp3 so other computers can find it. kinda like a treasure map
i send this tiny file to my friend, who loads it into qbittorrent. their computer takes a moment to find mine over the vast expanse of cyberspace and then (as long as my pc is running and the file is still where it should be), it gets copied from my hard drive to theirs
this is the cool part: if somebody else loads that tiny file, they can download it from both of us. if i'm offline but my friend is on, the third person can still get it. this also means that if two people have separate halves of the file, they can download the other half from each other. as long as some combination of people have the pieces between them, they can all have the whole thing.
crucially this does not require a server!!! you can just upload the file to a few people and as long as they keep it, it's still accessible. as long as somebody, somewhere is still connected, it's available forever. the only way it goes away is if everybody disconnects from it.
please learn to torrent
An expert guide to get started using torrentsTorrents are one of the most popular forms of file sharing on the internet, accounting for over
always use qbittorrent, do not use bitorrent or utorrent.
still caring about internet friends you lost touch with years ago is so embarrassing. yeah i had a deam we met up irl recently. the last time we spoke was maybe 7-8 years ago. i still wear the laces we randomly decided was a sign of our friendship. i dont know what any of your socials are or if youre even active on any. sometimes i see someones art resemble yours and i wonder for hours. do you still go by that name you chose? whenever i see it i wonder if its you. we couldve passed each other in this vastness a thousand times and not have a clue.
we were lonely kids having fun together. do you remember?

Acknowledging that “critical thinking” means “thinking about things in a thorough way from different perspectives” and not “finding every flaw in a thing and fixating on it until all the joy is gone” is so liberating.
It’s supposed to be about intellectual curiosity, not about finding ways to devalue things that aren’t perfect or that we personally dislike.
Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
I scheduled this in 2025 to give you all a week to make Moon Day Monday preparations! I think I will order a little rocket cake or bake some moon phase cookies!
It's coming, cousins. ...This could be as big as March 15th if we made it that way...
