You might be cool but you will never be āFĆ«anor striding into the chamber mid-council in his full armourā cool
LOTR CHAPTERS: THE RETURN OF THE KING - Chapter Seventeen: Homeward Bound
At last the hobbits had their faces turned towards home. They were eager now to see the Shire again; but at first they rode only slowly, for Frodo had been ill at ease. When they came to the Ford of Bruinen, he had halted, and seemed loth to ride into the stream; and they noted that for a while his eyes appeared not to see them or things about him. All that day he was silent. It was the sixth of October. Ā Ā āAre you in pain, Frodo?ā said Gandalf quietly as he rode by Frodoās side. Ā Ā āWell, yes I am,ā said Frodo.Ā āIt is my shoulder. The wound aches, and the memory of blackness is heavy on me. It was a year ago today.ā Ā Ā āAlas! There are some wounds that cannot be wholly cured,ā said Gandalf. Ā Ā āI fear it may be so with mine,ā said Frodo.Ā āThere is no real going back. Though I may come to the Shire, it will not seem the same; for I shall not be the same. I am wounded with knife, sting, and tooth, and a long burden. Where shall I find rest?ā Ā Ā Gandalf did not answer.
6.8 The Scouring of the Shire
Only two chapters left, but this oneās no shorter or calmer for it! Thereās still one battle to go, and if youāve only known the movie versions until now, this one will come as quite a shock. Try to read these 30ish pages by the 31st.
How sad is it to see the Shire this way? But nowās the time for any Sam/Rosie shippers. And at least we get to see how far the Hobbits have come! Whatās your favourite part of this last adventure?Ā As usual, please post your content/recs/responses on your own blogs and tag it āsilmreadā within the first 5 tags for others to find at their convenience. Happy reading! Ā
The Two Towers (IV) - Chapter 10: The Choices of Master Samwise
such a great final chapter! starting right off with Samās pretty epic fight with Shelob. I love how itās written like itās the stuff of legend, I mean, he deserves that :) and it is the most impressive feat weāve seen so far imo, right next to Frodo carrying the Ring for this long, Iād say. speaking of, thinking that Frodo is dead, Sam takes it and pretty much immediately puts it on to avoid the Orcs. I was sort of hoping heād take it off before long, though D: but I guess since he hasnāt beenĀ āattunedā to it itās not that dangerous yet. then again, they are right under Sauronās nose basically..
as to the title of the chapter, and Samās struggle and not feeling worthy, ugh I feel this. but I also loved the voices in his head - which I pretty much read as Gandalf, Elrond, Aragorn, Frodo, basically anyone in the fellowship - telling him he is worthy. that was good.Ā
quite a bit of Orc stuff again, Iām reminded of the Merry and Pippin chapter in the beginning of the book. these Orcs seem a bit smarter, though. the one called Shagrat: such a dumb name and Iām ofc reminded of the Dimmu Borgir guy :ā)) my favourite part of the Orc conversation (btw nice twist on the Ring letting Sam understand them!)Ā was of course their description of Sam, or at least who they thought was out there somewhere, someoneĀ āmore dangerous than any other damned rebel that ever walked since the bad old timesā :)))

Silmread will be in this space tomorrow. Family stuff! Running late!
@zathuraroy5 kinda prompted me with my rendition of Goldberry, Tom Bombadilās wife, and I kept thinking of the description Frodo gave her,Ā āSlender as a willow-wandā and obviously, I was inspired by @ewebeanās AOAA piece! itās too gorgeous, it stuck forever in my mind, and itāll be forever my headcanon for them tbh... but while reading that bit again, I also thought she could be our lovely trans river daughter Ā“w`
and here she is, doing herĀ āwashingā of the river! lovely odd bit of the book, imo!!
āWhat do we do with the Ring?ā plans:
Erestor: Send the Ring to Tom Bombadil
Now, admittedly, Iām a tiny bit completely and utterly biased about Erestor, since heās my absolute favourite, but this was a pretty good idea. I mean, no one else had offered anything useful yet. Someoneās gotta go first and Bombadil sounds pretty powerful if āwithin those bounds nothing seems to dismay him.ā On the other hand, as Gandalf says, probably not understand and throw the ring away.
8/10, good attempt, Iām proud.
Glorfindel: Throw it in, or send it over, the Sea.
For an ancient lord of Gondolin, Glorfindel doesnāt offer much new right now. Throwing things in the sea is an age old tactic, true, but the Ring survived being lost for thousands of years. Unlike other ancientĀ artifacts, this thing is almost sentient. The Sea isnāt going to help. Your friends across the water sent YOU over to help.Ā
6/10, I expected better but you tried.
Elrond: CAST IT INTO THE FIRE
As good as it might sound, this is a ridiculous plan. How are you going to get the Ring all the to Mordor? Walk? Are you going to walk all that bloody way, Elrond? No. Youād have to be exceptionally lucky to get into Mordor at all, let alone all the way up to Mount Doom alive - Sauron would have to be distracted by an attacking army or something. You should have pushed Isildur in. But to be fair, out of all of them, this is only one that offered an actual end to the Ring. Iād take my chances.
5/10, highly unlikely to succeed, but not impossible.Ā
