I think most of it comes from experience, I've looked back at my art for so many years and managed to work on what I find ugly on canvas. In the end, it's made me think of the final presentation from minute 1 of working on a drawing!

it's always good to expand your skillset, also, because after a while you get used to the techniques you use most, and you could be missing out on an easier way to get the drawing look finished! Or even looking much better!

but here's some things I've learned from my peers that might help: 1- try your best to have an actual finished lineart by the end of the drawing process. Coloring the illustration will bring out the flaws in the construction, most of the time. You can't paint over something that doesn't exist, and if you do, you'll have a lot more work to do in painting.

2- play around with color effects. Sometimes the colors in your swatches or palette need to be worked on to make the illustration point to the direction you were envisioning.

3- don't be afraid of leaving empty canvas spaces behind. It's much better to draw a kickass character and a minimal background to suggest where the scene is taking place than trying to rush a whole stage to have to render afterwards. If you're crunching for time, just try to stylize the white of the canvas into your picture, like professional designers do!

I'm still in North & South station, I don't think I'll ever leave.
