The beautiful appearance of the Giver of Gifts, Melkor. The prototype of Annatar
Then one appeared among us, in our own form visible, but greater and more beautiful; and he said that he had come out of pity. [...]
Then we looked and lo! he was clad in raiment that shone like silver and gold, and he had a crown on his head, and gems in his hair. ‘If ye wish to be like me,’ he said, ‘I will teach you.’ Then we took him as teacher.
– Morgoth's Ring, The Tale of Adanel
Morgoth: ...we might be horrible people.
Sauron: I think that was obvious when we were talking about putting babies in microwaves.
I know I'm an angbang-brained weirdo, but the fact that Mairon stayed in Melkor's temple after he finally sent the Numenorean fleet to its death is such an important detail to me.
Because he could have chosen to be anywhere. He could have sat in the king's palace, even on the throne itself, which would also have been symbolic, and no one could have prevented him from doing so, even if they had wanted to. (By that point people had already started calling him a god.)
But instead he chose to remain in a place that not only symbolized his own power over the island, but also connected him to Melkor.
"Look how far I've come and how much I've accomplished. I've avenged both of us now."
It's as if he wanted to share his victory with Melkor, to celebrate it together the way they did in the old days.
My hot take about Sauron escaping to Taur-na-Fuin is that I don't believe Sauron was going there to hide. I think he chose the specific place because it was the closest area in which he could establish a new fortress and a throne to deliver to Melkor as substitute of what he lost at Tol-in-Gaurhoth.
"for Thu had flown to Taur-na-Fuin, a new throne and darker stronghold there to build."
The location is chosen because it's close by and therefore it allows them an oversight of approximately the same areas, and the proximity to Tol-in-Gaurhoth doesn't hurt Sauron personally either, since he's injured and still bleeding when he has to choose where to go.
After all, even if Sauron had not basically advertised his presence, which he did due to the horrors he caused, we know that Luthien mentions Sauron's location to Melkor:
'A lawful errand here me brought; from Thu's dark mansions have I sought, from Taur-na-Fuin's shade I fare to stand before thy mighty chair! '
And Melkor acts surpriised that Luthien is there because he knows that's not Thuringwethil, but not concerning the location from which she's coming from. This implies that he may already know. My point is that if Melkor wanted to he could have tried to force Sauron back at any point. Sauron was never hidden from him. And what he did served Melkor.

Little Drunk
