lazy saturday | bob reynolds
summary: a day off after endless missions and being separated from each other
warnings: none! just short and sweet, probably not proofread
the early morning sun spilled through the closed curtains of the still sleeping, silent tower. under the sheets, still in bed, lie two bodies— still curled up with each other, legs tangled together, never seeming to be close enough, even in sleep. one of them stirred slightly, his messy hair falling over his eyes as he shifted towards the other.
you felt heat press against your back as he drew you even closer to him, sighing contently once he was sure you couldn’t shift away from him. bob always radiated heat– it was no problem at all to you, who was always cold. he exhaled deeply against your neck, fingers brushing your hair to the side so he could place a gentle kiss against your skin. “i missed this…” his voice was deeper, slightly raspy as sleep still clung to him. you felt a smile creep onto your face as you savored the feeling of being in his arms again. he had been away for two weeks, on some secret ops mission just over the border. two weeks wasn’t long, but for the two of you, it may as well have been years.
most days the two of you would be found sitting hip to hip, fingers usually laced together as you shared books or watched movies or nineties comfort sitcoms. the others had gotten used to it— the constant closeness, the way bob would just cling to you like you were his life preserver in an endless ocean. if you weren’t together, the others would actually assume something was wrong. so when valentina announced an away mission— somewhere in the forest of canada, for maybe a month, the room went silent. bucky, bob and ava had been chosen; val thinking they were the best chance of getting in and out without being noticed— or killed. it had gone smoothly and mercifully taken two weeks less than you had prepared yourself for.
they had gotten in late last night and hadn’t had any cell reception to give you a warning. you were moping around pathetically, john and yelena trying helplessly to keep you distracted and busy and not missing bob. the movie marathons and board games were fun, but you had missed bob terribly. you were honestly wondering how you could possibly survive another two weeks, when the security system went off and you heard the jet landing on the roof. yelena and john just exhanged glances, knowing it was two weeks early, but silently relieved they wouldn’t have to watch you mope around any longer. you were running to the elevator, barefoot and not bothering to grab a coat.
it had been pouring rain, the wind nearly knocking you over as you stood in bob’s shirt and pajama pants, waiting. you had run into his arms before he had even stepped onto the ramp of the jet, soaking wet and shivering but only seeing him. bob was still in his sentry suit, half asleep, hair sticking up in it’s usual fashion. he wrapped his arms around you, lifting you off the ground. “hey—“ he exhaled in a laugh, burying his face in your hair. “i missed you—“ you felt like you could finally breathe again. bob held you tighter against him and he wasn’t sure if it was more for you, or for him. bob didn’t say anything for a while, just holding you tightly against him, letting his heart beat normally again as his arms became familiar with you again. his breathing was quicker, not sure why he was so emotional to have you in his arms again. “are you okay?“ you pulled your face away from his chest and looked up at him with worried eyes. “yes,” bob kissed your head, realizing you wete the one soaking wet and without a coat, “i’m more than okay now.” you smiled widely, burying your face against his chest again. “i love you…” he let his chin rest on the top of your head, eyes closed. “i love you.” bob squeezed you again before letting your feet touch the ground, “let’s get you inside… you’re soaking wet and shivering.” you were still smiling, “i don’t care…” you reached up on your toes and placed a quick kiss against his lips. bob was grinning then, so unlike the god-like hero he had been for the past two weeks, and finally once again just your bob; the quiet, shy bob that blushed if you complemented him, and spent all his free time reading books with his head in your lap.
bob had insisted that you take a shower, you had insisted only if he joined you. he didn’t complain at all; holding you tightly under the hot water until you stopped shivering and he felt like himself again.
bob was smiling to himself when you finally opened your eyes to look at him. “good morning.” his eyes glowed slightly, a side effect that happened every time he was around you: happy, content, finally at peace again. “i missed you.” he pulled you into his chest again and you breathed him in deeply. his skin was hot— it always was, warming up your cheek in the cool fall morning. he wrapped his arms around you, warming up every inch of you from the inside. “i was going to make breakfast…” bob laughed softly when you shook your head, “no? you need to eat, angel.” you shook your head again, burying your face deeper against him, “just need you.” he hummed softly, knowing full well if you could climb in his skin you would- and even that wouldn’t be close enough. “i don’t think i can replace food, my love.” you sighed softly. “ten more minutes and how about we go to that cafe down the street?” you hummed again, wanting nothing more than to stay tangled up with and wrapped around him all day. “baby..” he tried sounding firm, but the smile on his face was evident in his voice.
you had a book tucked under your arm, wearing one of bob’s old sweatshirts over black leggings and worn converse. he was looking at you from over his shoulder, eyes sparkling. he had convinced you to get up finally, after promising to return exactly to your cuddling positions when you got home again. bob had his own book in his hand, wallet stuffed in his pocket, holding his hand out to reach yours. you took it, fingers lacing through his. “ready?” you looked down at your attempt at an outfit and nodded, kissing his jaw once more before bob opened the door for you.
bob had his hand in yours, still only watching you as you walked down the sidewalk. you were filling him in on the few things he had missed— mainly the daily arguments between john and yelena that yelena always instigated. he filled you in on the mission, mostly reiterating how much he had missed you. bob nodded to every man you passed, pulling you closer to him each time, without realizing. his arm would move from holding your hand to around your shoulder, eyeing the few men that would look you up and down with a look usually only reserved for battles. your heart swelled each time, knowing full well no one would be able to take you from him even if they tried.
the coffee shop was always busy, though today you had gotten there earlier than the busy church crowd. bob walked you to your usual spots, setting his book down next to you, before going to order. bob returned shortly, kissing the top of your head as he handed you your usual drink. you grinned up at him, kissing him again, not at all caring about the public setting. bob had his tea, stirring it slowly as he cracked open his book. you leaned against him, returning to your own book. the pair of you lost yourselves in your books and each other’s company, not saying a word even after your food came and was long gone. the cafe filled up, the room got louder, and still, the two of you stayed silent, slumped against each other, occasionally exchanging a few i love you’s, or just checking in. the morning passed into afternoon, and your reading date was only interrupted by the sudden roll of thunder. bob looked up, eyes on the sky through the window, now dark and dreary.
people outside had started ducking indoors, scared to get wet before the rain even started. the cafe filled up quickly, people pulling out umbrellas and bumping into each other in the stereotypical rude new yorker style. a man had stumbled into you, having been pushed by someone else. bob jumped up, “hey—“ you grabbed his arm, eyes widening slightly. the man just glared at him, pushing past him and towards the counter. bob mumbled something, cold stare on the man as he turned away. “are you okay?” his eyes glowed slightly, jaw tight as he turned back to you. “i’m fine, bob…” he stood over you like a guard dog, hands on your shoulders as he looked you over in concern. “bob. hey…” you put your hands over his, trying to bring his attention back. “hey–“ you put your hand on his chin gently, tilting his head so he was looking at you, “i’m fine… okay?” bob nodded, jaw still tight, eyes shifting back to you, “sorry… okay…” he shook his head slightly, “sorry… i’m— he didn’t apologize…” you pushed his hair out of his face, biting your lip slightly, “it’s okay. hey… do you want to head home?” bob nodded, breathing steadily as he fought to calm down again, “sorry…” bob didn’t usually get worked up easily, but sometimes, if it was you, he would get slightly over protective in public. “it’s fine. let’s go home…” you kissed his cheek and gathered up the two books from the table.
bob held his arms out to carry the books for you, giving you a small shy smile as he took your hand again. it was already raining when you stepped outside, earning a small curse from bob. he looked at you apologetically, but you were laughing as the rain once again fell against your skin. bob tucked the books under his shirt and took your hand again before the two of you started running. you were laughing, giggling really, as you sprinted across the sidewalk through the rain that was gradually becoming a downpour. bob pushed open the door for you, squinting against the rain that was running down into his eyes. you pulled him in behind you, breathless and still laughing. bob stopped against your chest, smiling stupidly, soaking wet and equally out of breath. you shivered slightly, eyeing bob with a playful expression. he pulled the books out from under his shirt, smiling proudly, “they’re mostly dry, at least.” you laughed, taking them from him and tucking them under your arms. his hair was stuck to his forehead, water running down his face. his clothes clung to him, dripping onto the floor. you were cold, still shivering slightly. but the only thing you could think about was how unbelievably attractive bob looked— with his messy, dripping hair sticking to him and his clothes clinging to him and leaving very little to the outline of his abs. your lip twitched into a smirk as he met your eyes with a playful sparkle and you pulled him in for a kiss.
