hi i was just wondering if i have some form of anxiety? because i have this underlying fear that my family (we live in different continents) aren't actually okay and they've been kidnapped or something and when they call i'm listening to recordings of them speaking, and whenever they don't answer my calls i automatically think there's something wrong or something terrible has happened. it's been going on since i was a kid, and i just don't know anymore. thanks in advance tag as shodi please

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been dealing with this. It sounds really distressing, so I can only imagine how hard this must be for you to go through.
Unfortunately, we aren’t professionals, so I can’t say whether or not you have anxiety. What you’re experiencing could be symptoms of a few different illnesses, but it’s possible that this is anxiety. It also sounds like it could be paranoia, which can be associated with several mental illnesses. Although I obviously can’t diagnose you, I will give you the symptoms of anxiety attacks and give you some information on paranoia so you can see if either of them sound like what you’re experiencing.
The symptoms of anxiety are:
Sudden overwhelming fear
Palpitations
Sweating
Trembling
Shortness of breath
Sense of choking
Chest pain
Nausea
Dizziness
A feeling of being detached from the world (de-realization)
Fear of dying
Numbness or tingling in the limbs or entire body
Chills or hot flushes

Paranoia generally involves having irrational thoughts (though they seem rational at the time). Some people with paranoia believe that they’re being watched, that everyone is out to get them, etc. To the person, the thoughts seem real, but the people around them know that the thoughts or irrational thoughts are false. Paranoia can be extremely distressing for those who are affected by it.
Regardless of whether either of these things sound like what you’re experiencing, I definitely think you should at least consider reaching out for help. Someone like a therapist or psychiatrist would be able to diagnose you and then treat you accordingly. It’s important to know that you don’t have to go through this alone and that there are people who can help you with this. When you feel yourself panicking like this, there are a few things you can do to try to calm yourself down. For some ideas on how to relax, you can look at our calming anxiety and panic page, which might help you. Deep breathing can also help, so feel free to try some breathing exercises, too.
