A healthy ocean needs sharks, unfortunately sharks are still being hunted by trophy fishermen in Australia. This means mature, breeding size sharks are targeted declining their populations to a critical point. @sharkbaysharksanctuary is trying to create a shark sanctuary at Shark Bay western Australia. TIGER BEACH... an amazing world renowned spot to interact with #sharks in clear water... a #sharksanctuary where sharks are protected. Also where these photos were taken. My friend @sharkl0ve grew up in the #bahamas and has seen sharks being killed by locals. Apparently fear is the reason, its understandable, imagine spearfishing for your livelihood and having sharks come up behind you not knowing that these shark interacts with humans often, only thinking your in danger. These sharks are bringing millions to the Bahamian economy but that understanding of their value doesn’t run deep enough into local communities. Most locals only see sharks hurting their lively hood by effecting their fishing habits. And it’s not just them, sharks are killed by USA residents who know there is no enforcement. There’s also a problem with Dominican and Chinese poachers. Why are none of the big names visiting this place talking about it? Why will #sharkweek continue to film here but not cover this story? We have a responsibility if we subject these animals to our constant presence and chum, to protect them, to work with the locals to ensure they are still safe long after we leave with our pretty photos. We need enforcement of laws and we need to work with locals to help ease their fear. Most of all.. we need to stop greenwashing these sanctuaries and own up to the fact that nothing is safe just yet.
