Just saying. Maybe his shadow magic depends on his syndicate strength, or it is so demanding that without his syndicate’s need for secrecy the effort is wasted. Spend those magic points elsewhere.

Shadow magic, broadly, is defined by the ability to "cast a shadow of one's soul". This is some animalistic, semi-corporeal representation of the person. This shadow can interact with the world as if it were physical, and gives of reflected divine light - for the purposes of magic, moonlight. In addition to this ability, each caster has their own unique skillset based on one material or concept.

This type of magic is inherited, though not through family lines. Instead, when a shadow caster enters the afterlife, they leave behind their "mantle", which is passed to the next baby born. This is not noticeable until about puberty, when they will begin to manifest their magic. The specific mantle they inherit determines the magic skillset they receive, but who they are as a person determines the form their shadow takes and the exact manifestation of their skillset.

Shadow casters grow more powerful with age and experience. Their shadow form strengthens with age, even though their body might decline. Their magic grows in complexity and potency.

All casters give off light when casting their shadow, of a color or colors determined by their personality and who they are. They can also all see better in the dark. The shadow forms affect living creatures and plants in a manner dependent on the society nearby and how shadow casters fit into it.

Though their magic has an infinite source of energy, it is still being channeled by humans. Limitations are in place for the extent of the abilities a caster can have. In addition, a caster cannot use magic properly if their spirit is broken. Concerning the shadow form, though it cannot be 'killed', the shadow form does feel pain. Sufficient infliction of pain or other means of weakening a caster's resolve will make it difficult for them to cast their shadow until they have recovered.

There are two subtypes of shadow magic, which can be seen by their shadow form:

Partial/Half Casters:

These casters have only partial shadows. Either their physical body is augmented with animal traits, or they have a semi-functional animal form (it might flicker in and out, or perhaps only be useable under certain circumstances).

They can use light magic while not casting their shadow.

Full Casters:

These casters have a full, and fully-functional, animal form. This form may have unique abilities based on their magic skillset, but it also has the same abilities of the animal whose form it appears in.
