Chapter 1: Whiplash
Aristotleâs natural philosophy claimed the Empyreal to be the highest of heavenâs, in comparison to the earthâs mortal elements of fire, water, earth, and wind, aether stood above as something deeply holy, beyond creature, belonging to the gods. The young wizard does not know of Aristotle and wonders why this thought came to mind, it makes his head hurt. Makes his head hurt worse after the Ark crashed. The truth is that his whole body hurts; he's lucky he can stand up; lucky he can hear the aether storm outside of the pilot deck. The storm that ravaged all other ships before The Ark, shredding through its strong metal hull like paper. The Young Wizard wonders if Captain Pork was as good of a captain as he claimed to be.
Though truthfully, the crew was alive and not even severely injured. If anything, the Ark suffered more damage than they did despite nosediving into the shore. Dr. Beans was the first face the Young Wizard saw, Raven- Allah knows where Pork and Sparck went.
âThat's it, nice and slow.â The Young Wizard balanced with his staff but his legs were shaking. âYou were out cold for a while kid, how do you feel?â
âHorrible.â He wish he stayed down.
âI did a full diagnostic on you when you were out snoozing: Good news, you're gonna be fine, if not nauseous. Bad news: Youâre in Empyrea.â Dr. Beans stated pointedly, âThe ship took a knockout punch to the chin. It's bad, and the jewel inside that cyclo thingy looks even worse.â
The cyclolabe . . . Yea . . . The storm jewel powered compass . . . To find Zanadu, it's cracked and dull. The young wizard half remembers that it works with the Lux Capacitor as navigation. He wonders if by the feathers of Raven the Ark managed to crash land in Zanadu, or if there were one or two cyclolabes. His head hurt too much and he needed air.Â
The asteroid lodged in the wall and a discussion with Co-pilot, Sparck, confirmed what the Young Wizard already knew: The Ark would never fly again; worse that they were nowhere near Zanadu, so much for finding the perfect captain. Though Sparck was not out of ideas, âWe may however still be able to use our escape to reach Zanadu,â his voice was flat, too calm for the situation at hand, the Young Wizard could only half hear Sparck through static, âWe cannot leave this island until the storm jewel in the cyclolabe is replaced. Captain Pork is outside, you can help him search for a new one.âÂ
Every step felt more excruciating than the last, not painful, just nauseating, dizzying. The Young Wizard has gone through worse and so the thought of Mellori kept him from falling down the wing. As he looked down at the stone beach, the Young Wizard sways, remembering the violent swirling Sands of Time, spiralling around them, the deep dark pit appearing at his and Melloriâs feet stealing charms âtime time see what has become of me,â Grandfather Spiderâs voice still spinning, spinning- he lurched over the side of the ramp and threw his guts up. It burned, it hurt, it didn't make the dizziness go away. The Young Wizard puts aside the religious feeling and begged for Mellori to hold on, wherever she was stolen to. Stupid girl, stupid wizard who couldn't save her. He watched the rain wash away the bile from the basalt beach and into the aethyr, cupping his hands to take some rain and wash his mouth.
It tasted like sadness.
Surely this is heaven.
