Alright I have to admit I remain a bit chagrined about Morris' retelling of SGGK making Gawain so virtuous and self-actualized that he genuinely Does Not Want To Fuck The Lady rather than keeping him as the incomprehensible mess of chivalric fears and tensions and desires, some of which are insisting he has sex and some of which are insisting he not, all of which are performative to some extent but he's lost track of what's complete performance versus an actual value he holds and whether there's any difference, and I remain a bit sad about him jokeifying Bertilak to the point that it completely removes the "oh shit in this instance it actually IS gay to fuck a woman" tension tied up in all that. But I do have to say himbo!Bertilak (performative) is a take I am glad I have experienced in at least one retelling, because despite how it's used to detract from the complexity in this instance, it is very fun and a good interpretation of his behavior.
