Driving Distances
Conscious constraints of mobility. Partially inspired by Rinus van de Velde who limits the distance he allows himself to travel to 1250 kilometers and personally contemplating the kind of restriction that would feel optimal. In a world and life of constant and ever increasing options and parallel use of resources I'm interested in finding parameters that would provide a new perspective on freedom of movement, travel, holiday, exploration. Both from a professional as personal perspective, a hard cap to your options feels simultaneously daunting and refreshing. Through the use of mapdevelopers.com I plotted circles ranging from 500 to 2250 kilometers in 250km increments starting from my house. It is interesting to immediately experience the limit of 500km being too restrictive for the rest of my life but would be fine for a period of a year or two. 2250km gets me to Moskow, Athena, Istanbul, Casablanca, Reykjavik and Hammerfest which spans the entirety of the European experience and feels to be more than sufficient to commit to. Will experiment with this in years to come.

I have learned that it is true that we shouldn't put people in boxes. As I try to categorize people I catch myself grouping them into very narrow categories. It is obvious truth that no two people are the same. In almost all cases people have wildly variant nature and nurture, both of which seem to affect our personalities and development. The moment you categorize someone you take your incomplete image of them and fill in the blanks with whatever seems to fit best. Not only does this make your image of said person flawed, but in my experience it can make it more difficult to be open to how they actually are. Perhaps we don't want people to challenge the accuracy of our boxes, else we have to do the chore of broadening and multiplying them.Â
More importantly I have found that as I put others in boxes, I tend to box up myself as well. I do these things that make me a ___ which means these other things about ___s likely apply to me as well. This is not how it should be. Your actions should not constrict your personality into increasingly specific definitions. We are unspecific. Any person can likely imagine at least several stereotypes they’d fit perfectly into at different times in their lives. We are not each individual box at the time it’s used but the culmination of every box we have and will ever fill.
I am not the things I do. I am not a collection of what I have learned and accomplished. I am the unique creativity that flows through my every action, my every thought, and my every emotion. Whether I do or don't, I am.
