gonna keep this to show mensah because while she and book mensah are deeply entwined in my brain they are slightly different specimens:
I love how she's centered around what feel like three contradictory character traits of compassion and iron-will. to me one of her character defining moments is that tiny interaction in ep five where gurathin asks her like "what ever happened to consensus?" re: letting openly un-governed secunit back on the team and her response is "we'll reach it. eventually." because, she's right! everyone does get on the same page about that Eventually, but it also feels like a contradiction of the "everyone has to be on the same page now before well all make the move" ethos. she has to constantly strike balances between listening to what people want vs making what she objectively knows is the right choice, and she doesn't really back down once she's made her decision about the best way to go ahead even if everyone else disagrees. she doesn't even back down when she disagrees with what she knows needs to happen! she did Not want to go into the deltfall habitat to get secunit and she still made herself do it anyway against pin-lee's and her own wishes. there is a central irony to being the presiding figurehead of a communal government that she seems to be aware of and she's delicate but deliberate about when she confronts that irony.

the fanbase has very much suffered from getting Extremely popular with Everyone almost Immediately upon release, from gay communists on tumblr dot edu who are at least nominally equipped to handle a lesbian protagonist going through the horrors to the preexisting very broad mainstream fanbase from breaking bad / better call saul who, um. are less equipped for that. which has understandably but unfortunately put the gay communists on the defensive all the time and makes a lot of the Posting be very "carol has never done anything wrong in her life and here's why" and leads people to be caught off guard and not know how to respond when she does clearly fuck something up. which is all particularly annoying for me, a person whose preferred The Character love language is "yes your honor my client did all that. what hmm no I'm not trying to get them acquitted? they need to go to jail so they have nothing to do but stew in regret for my personal benefit."

comrade that is exactly as much as I've seen, we are in the same deeply confused boat. my main temperature check for "good lord what is happening in there" is that a few people I follow who've had st themed urls/icons for Years have abruptly changed them over the last two weeks. I think they had a gay wizard which was great but then they fumbled the gay wizard so that was bad. I saw the words "conformity gate" and I don't think I need to see any more words after that.
