It took four years for Sebastian's worst fears to come true.
He was starting to forget.
Not what she looked like; there were several royal portraits to haunt him, and of course Eilidh was nearly the spitting image of her mother. But the sound of her laughter, the mischievous twinkle in her green eyes when she shoved cold toes against him for warmth, the particular hum to her magic. These were starting to slip away. And between raising a daughter and running a city-state it wasn't as if he had time to sit alone for hours, focused on remembering his wife's quirks.
He did dream about her, though.
Fingers softly stroking his hair, giggling kisses, the way she always smelled of mint and strawberries, even when none were to be found. Sebastian knew it was merely scraps pulled from his memory, not really her. He was no mage, after all, Even if she had survived her final battle to wander the Fade, he could no more physically visit to find her than he could fly.
But he missed her so deeply it ached, even now. So he would take the dream-phantoms, whether dozing at his desk or properly asleep. He would cradle her face and kiss her freckles. He would remain wary of demons, but he would enjoy whatever faint memory the Fade could give him of her as he dreamt.
Tonight it's a happy memory from their first week after she joined him in Starkhaven; sprawled in one of the palace gardens stargazing, her head on his shoulder and his cheek pressed to her hair.
'I wish every night could be like this,' she murmurs, gaze on the clear night sky.
'As do I', he replies, gaze on their intertwined fingers and a melancholy in his chest. 'But you know things will only get busier th' longer we're here, aye?'
'Mm,' she hums, squeezing his hand as she snuggles closer. 'But I think, together, we're enough to handle it.'
'We do make quite the team,' Sebastian agrees, the melancholy burning deeper as he kisses the top of her head.
She tips her head up, kisses him in earnest, and it's deep and sweet but hollow and he doesn't want to dwell on why.
But she doesn't give him the bliss of even temporary ignorance. 'I'm sorry I had to leave it so soon.'
'Astrid-' he begs, and her name is a lance through his chest. 'don't, love. Let me have this, please.'
She shakes her head sadly. 'I can't. Because you can't. You will always have me here' --she presses one hand to his chest and it's weightless as wind--'even when I'm gone from here.' Her hand rests at his temple, before tracing along his brow and down his cheek.
He shakes his head fiercely. 'I'd not lose you from either so easily,' he insists, and kisses her again, deep and desperate and tinged with salt, before she can reply. (He doesn't want to wonder which of them is crying.)
Sebastian woke alone, save the fading smell of strawberries and mint, and buried his face against her pillow as he wept.
It was a basic truth Astrid had learned early. For survival, safety, comfort, to protect and keep the people you cared about. It was just the field of battle that changed. Public opinion, literal monsters, religious zealots, those too desperate to care who they hurt, she'd fought them all. She could handle or weather them as needed.
But politics were an insidious beast and she was happy to leave that fight to Sebastian. It was far more fun to watch him than wade in herself, anyway. For all he'd never been meant to assume the position--and agonized over claiming it--Prince of Starkhaven fit him like his well-tailored doublet. The weapon might be words rather than his bow, a swift retort more valuable than deft fingers, but it was still impressive to watch.
And she appreciated the confirmation his tongue was just as skilled as his hands in multiple arenas.
Today her battle had been remaining attentive and undistracted by her husband or the worry Eilidh still slept, while his had been to secure funds for rebuilding Starkhaven's Circle. Astrid had plans for what they could do with it, to protect both the populace and its occupants. Plans Sebastian agreed with, hence his ardent speech on behalf of her passion project.
The nobility took some convincing, however; there were risks inherent with having a Circle, all their mages were dispersed to Kirkwall or Ostwick or elsewhere after the previous Circle's destruction. Why invite trouble by beginning anew? Their arguments flew thick as arrows.
Sebastian had counters for their attacks, deftly dodging insinuations he only cared because of who--what--his wife was(don't think we'll forget). "If we build it well and treat them well, perhaps there will be no trouble." Starkhaven didn't have the reputation of Kirkwall or Kinloch Hold, with the Princess being a mage, maybe they could find a balance that benefitted all.
He won his battle, at least enough to sway some of them it was worth trying. Astrid managed to hold her poise until they withdrew from the field of his victory, nodding polite farewells and murmuring thanks to the requisite council members. Perfectly proper Prince and Princess of Starkhaven.
But no sooner were then alone than Astrid threw her arms around Sebastian's neck and dragged him into a fervent kiss. He hummed deeply into it, and she'd swear she could taste the victory on his tongue. She raked her fingers up the back of his head, caring less than she should if she mussed his hair.
"Magnificent job, love," she managed, when they finally parted for breath.
Sebastian inhaled shakily, dazed blue eyes meeting green as he ran his thumb down her jaw. "It was your darlin', lass. All I did was tell them about it."
"Far more eloquently than I would have," Astrid demurred, one hand on his chest as the other rubbed lightly at his nape.
"A joint effort, then," he relented, bowing to steal another small kiss, this one almost chaste. "You do realize this was only the first battle, aye? We'll likely have to fight for ev'ry step of it."
"So we'll fight. I have a good feeling about our odds as a team." She traced the embroidery on his doublet with a fingertip.
He chuckled. "As do I. Nigh unstoppable, we are."
"Well," she bit her lip and held his gaze, "d'you have a moment to savor this victory, Bas, or is there more on your agenda today?"
"Oh, I always have time for you," Sebastian said with another chuckle, this one deep and heavy with intent. "Princess."
"Excellent," Astrid just had time to gloat before he claimed her mouth in another kiss.
Life might be a battle, she mused, as they managed to bump every wall on the way to the nearest sitting room, but maybe that was alright when you had something to fight for.
7. dancing with their hands holding on to each other [Astrid/Sebastian]
It was good she had the steps to this dance memorized.
She could move through them by rote as her attention was more fully consumed with the feel of her husband’s hand around her as they danced. Bowstring calluses roughing his skin, the gentle strength of his fingers holding hers, the minute shifts as they spun and turned.
“Y’ seem distracted, darlin’,” his voice murmured smooth and low in her ear.
Astrid hummed a quiet laugh. “Oh, yes, you all done up in your princely finery, I’ve no idea what could possibly distract me about that.”
Sebastian chuckled, his hand on her hip curling against the silk of her gown. “Then imagine what you’re doin’ t’ me,” he whispered, breath a warm rumble on the shell of her ear.
Astrid bit her lip and squeezed his shoulder, fingers pressing into the plush jacket. Should have known better to contend with him in this. She tipped her head back to meet his gaze, found his eyes twinkling with mischief. “Then I suppose it’s a shame it would be rude of us to leave just yet.”
“Aye, unspeakably,” Sebastian agreed lightly, his grip on her hand shifting to spin her out and back in as they pivoted.
Her fingers splayed over his chest for balance, their feet moving in perfect step despite their distraction. She could feel his heart pounding.
“They’d likely talk about it for months,” she murmured, curling her fingers around the side of his hand.
“At the least,” he said, a knowing grin curving his lips.
Astrid smirked back, a rare boldness filling her to see how far this could be pushed. “Do you think the throne could weather such a scandal, Prince Sebastian?”
Sebastian bent and brushed a tease of a kiss to the corner of her jaw. “I suppose there’s only one way t’ find out, Princess.”
He barely waited for the song to finish before sweeping her off down a hallway for a private dance of their own.
They could always make apologies when they went back.

Have some SebHawke family fluff on this lovely Sunday morning.
—
“Is he here yet?”
“Not yet, sweetheart.”
Barely a minute passed before hopeful green eyes were looking up at her again. “Now?”
Astrid smiled and reached out to stroke her daughter’s tousled black hair. “No, not yet.”
Eilidh ducked away from her touch to instead darted to haul herself up on the window ledge, struggling to see out. “How much yongeeerrrr?” she whined, nose pressed to the glass. “I want Da!”
You and me both, Astrid thought wryly, but maintained a calming smile. “Eilidh, whining is not how we get what we want, is it?”
Eilidh looked back at her. “No, Mumma.” She dropped to the floor and scurried over to tangle her fists in Astrid’s skirt. “But I miss him.”
“So do I, sweet girl,” Astrid soothed, bending down to pick her up. “But whining won’t make the horses go any faster, will it?”
“No…”
She walked over to the window so they could both look out, Eilidh settled firmly on her hip. “And it won’t make the road any smoother, right?”
Eilidh shook her head, leaning eagerly toward the window.
“So we’ll just have to wait patiently, won’t we? Your da will be home soon.”
The words had barely left her mouth when the clatter of wheels on cobbles reached them. Eilidh’s eyes lit up and she squirmed until Astrid put her down.
“Da’s back, Da’s back!” the toddler shrieked joyfully as she tore off toward the front door, narrowly dodging a servant on her way.
While the Princess of Starkhaven may have been bound by decorum that prohibited her own gleeful pell-mell charge, Astrid may have walked more briskly than usual as she followed Eilidh’s path. She caught up just in time to watch the carriage door slam open and Sebastian all but leap out, crouching to meet the small figure fumbling her way down the steps toward him.
“Da!” Eilidh finally reached the bottom step and launched herself off it, slamming into Sebastian so hard she almost knocked him over.
He laughed and wrapped one arm around her back as the other windmilled to keep his balance. “Ah, my sweet girl, I missed you!”
Eilidh wrapped her legs around his waist and buried her face in the side of his neck, muffling her words. “ ‘sed you, too. N’ver go ‘way that yong ‘gain.”
Sebastian chuckled and hugged her closer as he straightened. “While I can’t promise that,” his gaze found Astrid’s over their daughter’s head, “maybe you an’ your mum can come with me next time, sweetling.”
“I like the sound of that,” Astrid said with a wry smile as she closed the distance enough to claim a hug of her own(even if there was a toddler in the way). “I do agree with her, though, love,” she added as she kissed him on the cheek, “this was much too long.”
“Th’ one downside to politics?” Sebastian asked teasingly before he kissed the top of her head.
“Exactly,” she sighed. They keep getting in the way of time together. Knowing what she’d signed up for didn’t mean she had to enjoy all of it.
After the fashion of young children’s attention spans, it was only a few more moments of hugging before Eilidh was all too happy to drop down, intrigued by some of the things the servants were carrying into the palace. Astrid and Sebastian shared a knowing smile and shuffled closer in the space their daughter had abandoned.
“At least I always get you back,” Astrid said softly as she tilted her chin up.
Sebastian chuckled. “I missed you,” he murmured, hands sliding around her waist as he leaned his forehead against hers.
“And I you,” she whispered back, hand curving along his jaw and the nape of his neck as she pulled him into a kiss. “Welcome home.”
Tagged for another around of Picrew pairings by @undyingembers and @starsandskies so this time around

Tel/custom!Elara(SWtOR)
Sigi/Fenris(DA2)
Astrid/Sebastian(DA2)
None of the “face paint” options looked right for Fenris’ tattoos, so I just left them off, and since there’s only one shade of red hair in this, Tel looks like a fricking Weasley. xD
Oh, that would be Never Stop(Wedding Version) by SafetySuit. :)
And with this love song to you//It’s not a momentary phaseYou are my life, I don’t deserve you//But you love me just the sameAnd as the mirror says we’re older//I will not look the other wayYou are my life, my love, my only//And that’s the one thing that won’t change
It’s been their song for a very long time, and I nearly broke down in tears the first time listening to it after HLtA, bc Astrid stayed, Astrid died, they don’t get to watch each other grow older anymore and it’s not fair. So this is still their song, but it’s very bittersweet now.
