BA (Hons) FILM FILM201: SCREENCRAFT Critical Evaluation
During this module I had the opportunity to put my time management, budgeting, communication and production design skills to the test. To show my budgeting skills I created a spreadsheet and organised receipts for my producer so that we could keep track of the budget. I demonstrated my communication skills during group meetings and in conversation with the director and DOP during the planning of the film as well as contacting people in regards to props and negotiating the prop budget with the producer. I also took on responsibility and leadership as I ended up being in charge of most props and many aspects of the set such as the plants we borrowed and creating the paint decals; I also improved my decision making skills by discussing things with the other production designers and deciding what was actually possible to do given the time frame and budget that we had.
I considerably developed my production design skills and my personal style and method of working. I now have a better understanding of the level of detail I need to go into while planning, as well as gaining experience looking for and making my own props. And a clear Idea of the steps I need to follow when dressing a set.
There were definitely aspects of my work that I could improve, for example I need put the same amount of effort into planning each room. During planning I focused more on the greenhouse room because it was going to be the most challenging, however when it came to set dressing I realized that I could definitely have put more thought into the control room as some parts were added in last minute where there was empty space.
I also could have done more experimentation on making both the litter and doors. Some of the litter looked too uniform and not random enough, because I only used two colours of spray paint to cover them; a wider range of colours would have looked much better on camera. The doors were originally going to be sliding on wheels and a track, but when it came to putting them up it was apparent that they were not going to work so they had to be changed last minute to hinges. This did not drastically effect the script or set, but was definitely something that could have been avoided.
Overall the set was a success, it was completed in time for filming and looked how it had been planned with no major problems during filming.
Moving forward, learning from the mistakes I made and knowledge that I gained, I can certainly apply my new experience working on set and as part of a crew to future projects and work; as well as my improved time management and communication skills.
